Did I Buy The Wrong Coil?

I bought a coil off ebay from from Caltric but the lead wont clip down over the spark plug terminal, it seems the spark plugs terminal is to big. The coils description read:

    IGNITION COIL FITS HONDA ATC250ES ATC250R ATC250SX 1985 1986 1987

Im building an 85 250R and I quickly ordered this coil forgetting that my engine is from an 88 TRX250R.

I see the same seller has another listing for coils for the TRX250R's. But I looked up the NGK spark plug for both bikes and they both use a BR9ES so if they use the same plug doesnt that mean the lead that clips onto the plug terminal would be the same size?

The 250ES & 250SX are four strokes and use a smaller cap and spark plug.

The 250R & TRX250R are two stokes (Which you know) and use the larger 14mm plug and cap.

He either doesn't know what he is selling or messed up the listing.

    2 & 4 stroke coils don't swap.

Now Im afraid to order another one and get the same result.

I was looking at this one, the description is right but the pic looks like what I have now.

A lot of the other ads say its for the 250R but also for the other 4 stroke bikes, WTF, so frustrating as im close to finishing my build and I want to fire it up

Man the oem coil for an 88 trx 250r is still available here is the link http://www.partzilla.com/parts/searc...ESS/parts.html. It might be more expensive then the aftermarket ones but at least you know your getting the right coil and two its will last another 30 years or maby even more.

I was just looking at that lol. But I need the cap too, part #7, and its not available anymore. Im building the bike from parts so I need the coil, lead wire and cap.

Is part #7 just the rubber boot? Or does that have also have the metal clip that snaps onto the plug terminal?

Try taking the threaded terminal nut (for lack of a better term) off of the spark plug. Your coil may have a boot that clips onto the threads at the top of the plug, instead of the nut. Also, NGK offers about every kind of spark plug cap you could possibly need, most under $10 through your local dealer.

Number 7 is just the cap only

Like YTZ Drew said NGK makes some fine caps.

why wouldn't the coil work? they both four and 2 strokes supply ac current to the coil which then travels down to the plug and makes spark, the only difference is the plug boot on the end the 2 strokes usually use a larger terminal post, and the four strokes use the threaded terminal post, but if you go to an autoparts store and buy an actual ngk plug not the honda specific ngk the larger terminal will unscrew and you can use the current cap.
rectum nothin damn near killed them
