I then he breaks the 350X too

At least both were easy fixes this time!

I will say I prefer the R in the dunes - love the 2 stroke hit.

250r is faster , but 350x is great for trailer riding. The 250r has a better suspension and the frame is much more durable. Take your pick.

Speaking of suspension, is that something I could upgrade? I just acquired an 86 350x and will begin restoration in the next month or 2

The really can't imagine any time I would pick a 350x over a 250r. The 350x is heavier and sluggish in comparison. Especially for racing though, I'd go with the 250r.

I must be getting old because there are times when I prefer the X - mostly when I'm tired because it doesn't demand as much from me.

Get which ever is easiest to find. Then look for the other one...

350x is far from a race trike...needs a good bit or mods to be comes one. 250R would be better in stockish trim then slapping a set of 18's on it. 200x's make better MX bikes over the 350X i think, just so much lighter but need major help in power department.

Need to know your intended use before anyone can begin to make a rational recommendation...

There are times where the 350x is preferable over the R, and vice versa. Which one is better is completely situational. It all depends on the type of riding you are looking to do.
    Trikes:
    '85 ATC 350R
    '85 ATC 250R
    '86 ATC 350X
    '85 ATC 350X
    '84 ATC 200ES Big Red
    '84 ATC 125M
    '85 ATC 110
    '85 ATC 70/110

In his original post he states he is looking for a bigger race trike. Sorry, my earlier post definitely made it sound like I wouldn't pick a 350x in any situation, but I was referring to different racing situations.

You can race the 250 in the open class, but you can not race anything bigger than a 250 in the 250 class.

The 250 takes fewer mods to turn it into a high performance bike.

The 250 is a much lighter bike.
