Need help with lights on Honda 200x

I recently bought a 1985 honda 200x and a 1983 honda 200x. I am keeping the 1985 for sure, and I mainly just bought the 1983 to take some parts off. So the 1985 200x didnt have lights, so I took the headlight and taillight off of the 1983 200x and put them on the 1985. Both lights on the 1983 worked, but when I put them on the 1985, neither of them turned on. Im not sure if it could be the alternator or lighting coil on the 85. What are the most common problems with the lighting on these 3 wheelers? Any help is appreciated.

I would pull the left side engine cover and make sure the lighting coil isn't missing or broken. I don't think there are any lighting problems on the 200x or any 200 for that matter.

Thats what I was thinking, but I do not know where the lighting coil is at. Is it under the CDI box cover?

Left side of engine, round stator cover. There will be wiring coming out of it.

An even quicker check would be to fire up your trike then use a voltage tester to see if you have voltage on the head light and tail light sockets.
Keep in mind that 83-85 200x's don't have a voltage regulator. If either the tail light or head light blow, the other light will blow shortly after. Check and verify that both bulbs are working as well.

Also, check switch wires. Make sure power goes to switch and back down. If that's not it, check all the wiring for loose connections. Getting a wiring diagram is helpful.

I took the left side cover off and found what I believe to be the alternator. Everything looked fine in there. Do you have any idea where the lighting coil is? I cant seem to find it and a friend said that might be my problem.

Its the bigger coil next to the ignition coil it should be a reddish gold color but could have discolored. the lighting coil is part of the alternator. and anyway its not an alternator as much as a charging system and this bike doesn't charge anything it just sparks and runs lights.

Thanks for the information. Ill try replacing the lighting coil. Would it be best to replace the whole charging system or just the one coil?

Also, I was under the impression that the ignition coil was under the gas tank, or is it the black coil behind the left side engine cover?

The coil under the gas tank is your spark/ignition coil with the plug wire coming out of it. The coils down in the stator are just that, most refer to them as the stator and lighting coil. One provides the power for the ignition system, the other provides power for the lights.

So I found the lighting coil and the wire for the coil is soldered to another wire. Would my best option be to take them apart then re-solder the new coil wire on?

Try checking for power on both sides of the light switch. If you don't have power coming out, but have power going in, your switch is probably bad.
