    85 250sx Tranny question

Ok so I picked up a new toy 85 250sx for 200. I new it needed some work the guy I got it from blew the rear end no biggie, I have a couple of those laying around. It runs great no smoke to speak of and great compression. So I change out the rear and get ready for a test ride. Now reverse works and supper low works fine. 1st sounds like a garbage disposal and it will barley move. 2nd is like neutral I got nothing. 3rd and up are fine. So my first question is do I have to tear the top end down to get to the transmission or can i leave it be and and still replace whatever is wrong?

I think you do have to pull the top end off first.

If 1st is bad, it's the thrust washer missing because some BOZO, took out the countershaft by the 3 allen bolts on the left.

You'll find it in the bottom of the motor. Very common problem, 1st doesn't engage fully....

I have fixed this by pulling the kickstarter gear and retrieving that thrust washer; Look at the parts fiche!!
