Ok Ive done some research and your bike is an 83 200 your vin is actually JH3TB0505DC257551 you mistook the H for an M. Some one modified you rear fenders from an 185s to fit your 83 200 becuase the fenders for an 83 200 are so rare. Now do not get to upset that your bike is a 200 because the original atc 185 was not that much different from the 83 200. The only real difference was that the engine was slightly larger and it had front shocks which a lot of people put on there 185's because it was such an upgrade from the rigid front ends. now as for your cdi it more than likely is the root of your problem either that or you ignition coil in your stater. The output of your stater should be in any shop manual. Now as for a cheap cdi just go on ebay and type in atc 200 cdi and find the one with the square plug. I have heard good and bad things about the aftermarket cdi boxes. The best things to do would be to find an nos honda cdi box but those are few and far between and cost a lot when you do find them.

FYI on the NOS CDI, there is still time that has hit them, I'd say new is always best when it comes to a CDI unless you really want a perfect down to the bolt OEM restore.

Personally I put in JH8TB0505DC257551 as the vin, but both brings up the same machine.

Well this thing is a bit of a hodgepodge. 200 frame and a 185 motor. The harness I have takes a roundish CDI with 6 pins. I'll try getting one in if the stator tests good. Which two wires should I test on it again?

well if it take the round cdi this one is perfect because it is made by the original Honda cdi manufacturer here is the link http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HONDA-AT...kJxeZQ&vxp=mtr. Its more expensive but it is the original box.

Black/Red stripe to ground (green wire or engine ground)

Interesting on that CDI listing, brand new and the round plug!? Wish I could find the opposite plug for making the wire harnesses, instead of having to use old plugs with new pins installed.

There is a post around where a member replaced the round plug with a 4+2 style plug like all the modern machines have used since 85. Of course he ended up using a $5 china cdi off ebay and has a spare on him at all times + 2-3 in his shop.

So which one is it then? Does my ground on my voltmeter go to the green wire or black wire?

It don't matter which direction you hook it up on a coil, but you need the multimeter on the ohms setting to test resistance, not voltage. It measures if the coil inside got burned up (super low or super high resistance), or no connection (broken wire). Everything is tested with engine off and wires unplugged from the harness.

Sorry I didn't make it clear before.
