    Sing along: Fat guy on a little trike.... (Rear shock Q for 200x)

    I am restoring an 84 ATC200x and the rear is sagging. Odd that it only sags when I sit on it, not my wife. Maybe it just does not like me. I am only 6'3" 278lbs so that cant be it...... Is a stronger spring in the rear the answer? Maybe an adjustment on the shock? is Jenny Craig/weight watchers the answer? I have hard-tail trikes (84 Big Red) that do not seem to have this issue for some reason. I just cant figure this out.

    You need to rebuild the shock, change the compression and rebound damping and a custom stiffer spring, mail or PM if I can help.

    your about 100lbs too heavy for that bike and need a heavier spring on the bike plus i bet like 95% of 200x's out there the shock it out of oil and nitrgen and needs a rebuilt. you can contact the guy on eBay who does shock rebuilds and re springs them with heavier springs.

    or take it so some local MX shock that does suspension work and they can fix it up for you also but i'd deal with this guy because I have and he knows his stuff.

    I had Milner...onformula1...rebuild, refill, and recharge my rear shock on my 85 200X. I'm 6'6" and teetering at 250lbs these days. My shock was TRASHED before it left my house and I was convinced a 200X was a glorified pogo stick with my spanner nuts cranked halfway fown the body to get rid of the sag. Iwas ready to sell it. What I got back from Onformula1 was a radically different handling shock that I immediately installed a few days before TF and I beat the snot out of it for a week. It rode like a dream compared to before. I had a lot less thigh cramps too at the end of the day.

    I encourage anyone else to pm Onformula1 for a quote. I'm happy with the results...I did sell the X to a kid I know and he's 6'2" and he's got 30 lbs on me and he has no complaints so far either.

    Why are you ignoring Onformula1? He does amazing work. Your sounding like a jerk posting his ignoring him. Come on man. Do't be that way.

    because 5 years ago he was not here when I had shock work done so I posted the information I had on shock rebuild....not reading his post...so do not call me a jerk. I only posted information about getting a shock rebuilt.

    You know I have lots of respect for you. The way it was posted made me feel as if you were saying he is bad or do not use him. It sounds like that was not your intention. Maybe the way it was posted right after him and ignoring the fact he is a suspension specialist and vendor on the site just made it seem that way. I would have said I have not used him but this is whom I like to use. If your intentions (and it sounds as if they were) were to just provide information, then maybe the way it was stated just came off wrong. I just felt like you were smackin around a member who is also a vendor for no reason was my take. so if that was not it, my apologies.

    I have email Onformula1 about rebuilding a 200x shock I have right now so I was not dogging him. I just never read his signature saying he was a shock builder. Year ago no one would touch atc shock, now days there are a lot more people who will. I would use a member before anyone else. I use shortline and mosh's all the time for services.

    that's cool man. I have used him several times now and he does amazing work! no lies man! You'll really like the work he does and the extra mile he goes. I have seen him take a stocker, do some mix-n-match and make it perform as good as a $2500 shock for a fraction of the costs. So your in good hands. He can even redo a 200X shock!

    Yeah I have not decided on either using my 85 200x shock on my KX build or using long travel 83 250R shock.

    Just depends how much cushion I want for when I air out a hill climb. Not ready to decide yet on rear end, finishing up chassis 1st.

    Well it sounds like Onformula1 knows what he is doing, the more Threads I read the more he is mentioned. I have my wife's projects done (New counter tops in the kitchen, new hardwood floors in the kitchen, then the Foyer. I need to get to the garage before she realizes I am done) and I am ready to pull out all of the boxes of new parts and start tearing down the 200x. As soon as the shock is free of the fram I can look at it's condition; if it is savable I will contact Onformula1 for a rebuild.

    There is absolutely no indication yet that you need to rebuild the shock.

    First of all, what type of riding are you doing, ie, low speed cruising on flat ground or high speed pounding on rough ground?

    To determine if the shock is still decent or totally wasted, you can remove the spring then push the shaft all the way down then release it . . If it comes back up on its own, it still has at least some pressure in it.

    Next, put the damping settings on high then reinstall the shock without the spring . . Then, take the bike off the stand, and with the shock fully extended, simply let it go . . If it instantly slams to the ground, the shock is wasted . . If it takes a second or more to bottom, it is not totally wasted although it is likely worn at least a little after all these years.

    If the shock still works, and all you do is cruise around on fairly level ground, you can easily get away with just installing a new spring and running the damping settings on high . . This will save you a big chunk of coin.

    If your shock is wasted or you just want it rebuilt to freshen it up and possibly get the damping increased, another place I suggest you call is Race Tech Suspensions and then after you have talked to whomever you want, you can decide which place sounds best for you.

    The link below is to the page for your specific bike and they can calculate the spring rate you need and can also rebuild your shock and even install new valving if you want . . They are extremely knowledgeable and have been in business for 30 years . . They have done, and still do, the suspension on many Professional level riders bikes . . Ask them about their "Gold Valve" that they designed.

    Their cost for labor only on a rebuild is a paultry $100.00 and they do them pretty quick.
