Thanks for the love everyone. Unfortunately the 350x thumb throttle will have to be replaced with either a twist throttle or an aftermarket thumb throttle as the housing on the 350x thumb throttle is too small and the arm inside the housing doesnt move far enough to pull the carb slide all the way open

While i could probably use a stock 350X or even a 400ex carb, the carb on this bike is actually pretty special and I'm going to keep it if I can. Its a bored 36MM Keihin PE10 series, but thats where the similarities to any other PE series carb end. In the early xr500 days, Honda offered a "hop up" kit as an option for these 500's. The kit included a carb, cam, and high compression piston and related thing like a throttle cable, jets, valve springs, retainers, etc. This kit was called the "High Performance Options" kit

It took quite a while for the vintage MX guru i visited to determine that the carb is what it is and to locate the proper bowl gasket I needed. Looking this carb up by the numbers stamped into it was not an option as the numbers are not printed in the dealer technician's manuals or literature. The bowl gasket was the round style and had to be glued in place.
