    Honda quality welds?

I have been working on a restore of an 84 atc200x. I resort one part at a time and this weekends part was the swingarm. After cutting out the swingarm bearings with a dremel tool, I started to strip down the arm and was not happy with the factory (?) Weld job. Does the attached picture look like factory welds or did the previous owner have a hand in it? I have already started cleaning up the over-runs with a flap wheel.

    .
All those welds look dead original and virgin/untouched to me.

"Over runs" are sometimes used as stress relievers/crack inhibitors so if you jump the thing much, I would be hesitant to grind them flat all the way up to the brackets.

SHOCK AND FORK REBUILDING AND UPGRADES

For anything from a simple oil change to complete rebuilding or revalving of your original shock or forks, Race Tec Suspension can do it all at very competitive prices . . Their labor cost to clean and rebuild most shocks is only $100.00.

They are one of the biggest and best suspension rebuilding and modification companies in the world, and through feedback gained from the many riders they sponsor and thousands of customers they have acquired in the 30 years since they opened their doors, they have accumulated a massive data base which they can review to further help them set your suspension up just right the first time . . They are also the inventors of the very popular Gold Valve Emulators, so no one knows how to tune this system better then they do.

They can fix most rebuildable shocks irregardles of brand or age, and their turn around time is usually less than 1 week which gets you back to annoying your neighbors or burning up your favorite trail or track in a very short time, so why take chances with anyone else whom may have far less knowledge and experience, and whom may also take up to 6 weeks or more to return your parts.

They also sell a book which explains how suspension works and it also offers setup tips etc . . It was written by RACE TECHS owner Paul Thede whom is also a certified mechanical design engineer.

Good to know. I did not going them totally flat so I will leave them for now. Not planning on jumping. Just a put-around machine. May never see 35 MPH.

Ok, in your case, if you want to grind the extension on all the welds completely flat close to the cross weld on the shock linkage bracket, you can definitely do that and it will never crack . . you can also shorten the slight weld extension on the brake bracket . . just round/radius them a little where you stop grinding . . in other words, dont leave the end of the weld at 90 degrees etc . . Just blend it in a little, and it will also look nicer that way.

You can also grind the welds that are on top of the linkage bracket completely flat, just don't touch the welds on the bearing holders on the front of the arm or the ones on the axle holder.

Keep in mind, if you can see any scratch at all before painting, you will see it after unless you apply sanding primer and fill them in with that then sand it flat but that primer can shrink up a tiny bit and still show the scratches if it is a cheap brand.

If you spry paint the arm, i would protect it with clear lacquer . . it comes in matte, semi gloss and gloss finish . . home depot carries it in deft or verathane spray cans and it says its for wood.

No prob, you're very welcome . . You can still sand any weld splatters flat that you see and run the flapper over any splatter spots on the welds if you want because the splatter balls will stick out like a sore thumb after it is painted.

Keep us posted with progress photos if you want . It's always fun to follow a build.
