    1984 Tecate engine choice

If you had a 1984 Tecate roller, what engine would on install in it?
The tecate engine is all apart into 2 or 3 boxes.

    .
    The Tecate engine.

If you rebuild the Tecate engine, I have a new set of the original KOYO crank bearings I would sell, and virtually no other bearing will last as long as these.

If you want it to haul ass, I can tell you how you can probably get that done.

If you want to greatly improve the rear suspension, I can tell you how to get that done.

If you want to know how to put it together, you can use the free online manual below, plus I and others here will help you . You will need to post several photos of the gears and the shift forks etc so we can determine if they should be changed.

I'm not against putting a different engine brand, but the quadracer engine is about as old as the tecate. So wear and parts disponibility is the same. My selection criterias are:
Cost ( I'm ok to buy a complete bike, keep the parts I need and sell the rest to reduce cost)
Frame fitment ( I don't want to cut the frame in 3 parts to make it fits)
Parts disponibility ( the newer the better)

It is not about maximum performance. I don't want to swap in a newer 450 engine ($$$$ and fitment)
My goal is more something like a flat track racer.

The original engine is about your only chance of meeting those criteria. The frame and exhaust bolt right on.. Lol.. Potential for plenty of horsepower. Most engine parts aren't too hard to come by. No powervalve components to wear out. I've swapped a newer engine into that chassis before, and I would never go through all the trouble again for less than 500cc.. And I doubt I would even do that.
