This is very common for axles, especially if you get mud and water in there; That's why I stay out of the water.
Try another shop. I bet in 2 hours it can be fixed....
One thing almost no one does is grease the axle journal and all splines with thick tacky open gear compound grease. It save everything and can't even be wiped off, you have to use gas but no more spline or journal wear since I've done this.
