My problem with algebra was establishing a value for "A" as it applied to speed & distance calculations. It would have been a lot easier if the teacher would have told us if itwas a "A" rabbit, or "A" turtle we were talking about. And they said I was the dummy!

Reading this post makes me glad I'm part of the 3 Wheeling community. I'm completely in agreement with many comments. Education never ends and keep your powder dry.

Math all around us
Somewhere in Portland Oregon I was told that around 37% of high school students DON’T GRADUATE from high school. I struggled some along the way myself because of racing my karts & girlfriends, who doesn’t? Now back in the cylinder business math is around me 24/7; especially with mostly metric dimensions. .03937 is one of my most important numbers; for you folks who aren’t familiar the conversion number from inches to millimeters.
In the machining business we now have manual & CNC procedures. In my subsection of custom cylinder sleeve installation, it’s 98% manual operation. Both procedures are important although CNC machinery now dominates the production work worldwide. There is still room for the cam operated automatics.
In the community college system it’s impossible to teach manual & CNC machining in a 2 year period. They both have their place with math all around them. We need the trades; the higher the failure rate in high school the quicker our country goes down the tube.
Look at our presidential race this year; not much is said about the national debt or the fact that social security is going broke in 20 years or so. (Math all around Us) DA.

For quite some time now school/education has been about teaching kids WHAT to think, not HOW to think. In the end, it doesn't add up........
