    I want a big woody

I just can't get these damn woodies out of my head, it's terrible. Every since I went to the antique boat show all I can think about is getting one! I thought I'd share my photos and my experience there. My favorite boat was a 24' Glen L Tahoe. The couple built it themselves from the Glen L plans, it took them 37 months and then 5700 hours. It's a more modern designed hull with a vintage layout. It's wood construction but is encapsulated in epoxy. For all intensive purposes, it's the same as fiberglass but looks way better. It has a 496 chevy marine motor in it. I gave the gut my card but I don't think he'll sell it and I don't think I could afford it. I've been toying around with the idea of building one, but I don't know if I'm even capable of doing so. Any wood boat owners out there or interesting stories?

My phone is being a piece of crap right now, I'll try to load more pictures later. This is the Glen L

There is a guy right around the corner from me that restores old Chris Craft boats. Pretty awesome to see those old mahogany boats glistening on the water as the sun is setting.

You have expensive tastes, that's probably a $150k+ boat.

I go to the boat shows around here at 1000 Island once in awhile and there are a bunch of these boats there. Some have dual 440 Dodge motors in them.

Very nice stuff. I knew a guy that had one with an aluminum V8 in it. Not sure where it ended up.
    It sucks to get old

I built one of these in 2008 as a test run for something bigger, think I still have some build pics somewhere.

    http://www.svensons.com/boat/?p=HydroPlanes/DoodleBug

that has a lot of similarities in the construction techniques as the larger ones I was looking at.

My business went tits up shortly after and another has been put on the back burner since.

Went well enough with a Johnson 25hp outboard but it was a bit tame and there aren't many opportunities to use it on the North Sea a bit small for the prevailing conditions.
Toyed with the idea of fitting snowmobile inboard motor for something like 100hp but after second thoughts didn't want to end up like Donald Campbell so sold it.

I found it pretty straight forward to do as I am a carpenter by trade, but anyone who is good with their hands and can use a tape measure will find it easy enough if they take their time.

Had about £2500 timber in it, but much cheaper over your way.

Blast from the past, had a quick butchers and found some pics I had uploaded back then.

I don't have any meaningful advice to offer in this topic, but I am a boater myself and I am very fond of the woodies..

My family and I camp on Alger Island on 4th Lake near Inlet NY every summer. A fair amount of money lives/vacations in that area and there are always a few woodies kicking around on the Fulton Chain. I love those boats, they have a look and sound all their own. Their posture on the water as they are underway and planed out is the epitome of old school cool. Would love to own one someday.

Poolie, that is awesome. I have so much respect for people who can turn plans and some wood into something usable. I think I have the skills (and if I don't I know people who could help me), the space and means, but I don't know if I have the time and dedication to take on multi year project like this.

Joe, I know, don't they? If I do build one, I already have the perfect motor. I bought a rusted out 99 chevy truck last fall when I was on my LS motor kick, it's the first year they made them and has a cable actuated throttle instead of the newer throttle by wire style. A very mild build would make 400hp, and they sound like dragster at idle. The plans are laid in my mind, just gotta jump in and do it I guess

Sounds like you have a good handle on a solid mill for your future woody Joe!

Atc300r: My in-laws live between Clayton and the Cape. I am up there visiting with my family as often as circumstances allow... Lots of nice boats on the river! Been to Boldt Castle a couple of times... The day after the wife and I got hitched, and then again on our 10th anniversary. Awesome boating and fishing up there, I don't do either there nearly as often as I would like. Honestly, part of it is that the river scares me a bit.

Atc300r, this is from the Clayton Antique boat show? I read about it online. There is a museum and they're selling a couple of their boats because they're out of space. Looks beautiful, I'd love to make it there some day

Caminofeld, I guess all I needed was Elsa, now I have my big woody!
