HJC helmet, Gaerne boots.
My boots are too tall though. They are full length and have hard plastic at the tops. Once you get muddy, the boots and mud wear the paint down on the gas tank. My next pair will be the shorter style boots top help avoid this. Also need something a little more flexible. The Gaerns make it hard to shift.
I found the helmet at one of the on-line motorcycle gear shops. Look for the closeouts... last year's styles and graphics at much reduced prices. I think I paid a little over $100 for mine. I find the HJC helmets to fit nicely.

Cheaper boots IME are stiff and hard plastic and not very comfortable to wear, however they will protect your feet. If you're not a very extreme rider a half-boot would probably be a better option than a full mx boot.
As for a helmet just pick your favorite design. Scott goggles are cheap and work well, however if you ride alone or the conditions aren't really dusty goggles aren't really necessary. If you buy helmets from Motosport.com they make it really easy to return and exchange sizes if it doesn't fit.

As always- Everything I post is IMHO.
Uhh, equip the necessary amount of gear for the riding conditions? The only issue I've ever had from not wearing goggles is dust in my eyes. Let me guess, you put on full body armor whenever you walk outside to begin your day also, correct?
Besides, a little plastic lense isn't going to do squat if you have a bar end jammed in your face.
No, but I can assure you for every scar I have I wish I had been wearing full body armor that day, but don't let my experiences be your guide. If a muscle shirt, shorts, sandals and a skull cap are how you roll on 2 or 3 so be it. Mr. Darwin would be proud.
Sure beats nothing. Lexan is a lot stronger that you might think. Try tearing a set of goggles in half with your hands.

I wear full face mx helmet.workboots (just bought my first pair riding boots).Gogles for racing, safty sunglasses for trail riding.Sometimes I wear full face helmet with shield for cold winter riding.

Thought I'd embarrass myself a little today
Stiff pair of hiking boots & $60 helmet is what I use for riding. I do get mud in the face so I need something different there. But the boots-I like something I can walk around in. I bought my son used riding boots & helmet for $30. But poor kid can't walk in themAttachment 230612![]()
we always use a helmet unless riding in the pit area only at the mx track. all other places require a helmet. (pit areas are required to be 1st gear only and slow). I usually wear some sort of decent boot. when riding hard or racing, I will use full gear with boots, chest plate, helmet, neck brace and more.

I normally just wear rubber boots as we so encounter alot of mud bur was wondering if the motor cross style boots are waterproof? In the event I get stuck ans have to free my 350x j would prefer not to have a waterlogged foot lol
they are water resistant to a certain point, when riding in mud and much, I use my "ass kicker" boots. they are big rubber boots that go to my knee.

For cheap but decent boots I like my Fox 5 boots. Moose are like ski boots, you can't walk in them. Beware, anything under $100 will give you buyer remorse. Some day when I win some $ I will buy a set of Sidi boots.
Scott goggles are great. I see guys with Oakleys, but have never tried them. I tried a set of OTG goggles on the weekend for the first time. I don't like them! Take the movement of the fluid in my eyes, the hyper focal (or whatever the they are) eye glasses bouncing on my nose and the oversized goggles so tight to the helmet that they move in sync with it and you have a recipe for motion sickness. Maybe a set of younger eyes could handle it, but I'm sticking with contacts.
Helmets are a personal thing. Some guys won't look at anything under $500 bucks. Must be nice. I've never spent over $300 bucks on a lid and usually under $150. To me if it says Snell, fits and looks good that's all I need to know.
Should add about the goggles... Tinted lens are great in the desert, but if you ride in intermittently shaded areas like winding mountain roads, or trails that have overhanging trees that create shade amongst sunlight they can be dangerous. It's bad enough to drive into seeming darkness at a good clip only to have your pupils open up just in time to enter sunshine with clear lenses, but for some reason tinted goggles seem to make it worse. I usually start out with a lightly tinted UV rated lens and have a clear lens in my fanny pack in case we end up riding after dark. Scott is easy to get lens for.

In my opinion, it is a bad idea to ever ride without eye protection. As a kid, I rode without goggle often and even just a small bug in your eye will completely ruin your day. Given that the goggles will be the cheapest item of all the stuff talked about, there really is no reason not to use them.
