Strange noise in second gear- 1983 Honda ATC185s

Every time I shift into second gear, My Trike makes a strange noise, not unlike the sound of a chain dragging, but the noise only happens in second gear, sounds normal in every other gear. I tightened the chain, and it did not go away, it still makes the noise. I know its in the transmission, but any idea what exactly might make that noise? Id rather not break my engine, and It sucks because where I ride, Second is my most used gear.

Also, what am i looking at in time and all I will need to do to fix this problem.

while its engaged, the noise is constant until I shift out of second. It sounds normal in any other gear

Second is my most used gear.

Then it stands to reason that it will be the first to wear out. Sounds to me like you have some damaged gears.

ok, at this point, I may have to find another engine while I rebuild this one, it smokes a little, its lost power, and now its losing second. I know the gears will run me about 40, but what would it cost me to rebuild the bottom end?

Could I get away with rings and a bottom end rebuild, or would I be best going through the entire engine, or even using a lifan?

One question about the Lifan, I know it says 5 speed Manual, but by "Manual", do they mean a full manual, like a 200x, or a "Semi-Auto", like that of a 200s?

also, would a 250cc Lifan fit, or would I need to notch the frame?
