I'm no expert on them I like mine. From what I hear they go through a lot of Pistons some times lol . The one I have has a 32 year old top end and 130lb compression
I don't have a 2nd generation R (I want one) but I do have a 1st generation and it has the same engine. For the 2nd generation R they mostly changed the chassis. Anyway, compared to all the machines I've ridden (Tecates, Tri-Z, 3 generation R), that engine has a very smooth and linear power band. It is not a powerhouse but with the right mods it can be fast and fun. I would give it a thumbs up in the engine department.
I've ridden a really clapped out one twenty years ago. I remember it moved pretty good.
Here's the one I'm looking at. http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/snw/5598945150.html

$600 cash should bring that home. I really like that model. I will build one someday. I have the motor already.

84s are supposed to have the best suspension, that's got a upgraded dg exhaust. That's a 83 or 84, ad says 82 which isn't right.
I'm sure the decal on the frame says it was built in 1982...making it an 83. Or an 82 to someone selling something that they know little about. You might get lucky and get it on the cheap. [emoji106]
$800 if it's clean and tight with minimal oil leaks. $5-$600 if it's a bit looser (steering, swingarm, wheel bearings FYI) and leaky. $3-$400 if it's a roach.
They are great trail bikes ,cheap and easy motors to rebuild. If you don't get crazy on boring and correctly jet the carb and you can go a long time between rebuilds.
I, Agree on the 3rd gen. There getting 2500 to over 3000 in my area when they pop up .
People, also seem to think the air cooled ones are worth as much as the liquid cooled R's.
Like this "untouched" one.
