200ES BIG RED - Painting the gas tank and forks with base/clear

Currently restoring a 1984 Honda BIG RED 200ES. When it came to the tank and the forks I had a hard time finding the Honda passion red. I found an automotive paint for a Nissan that worked out well for me. I first used Redkote to coat the tank. Then I went on to stripping the parts, bodywork, painting with base, then clear. After that it was on to color sanding and buffing and finally add the decals. Click image for larger version.

That tanks looks great! What's the best way to clean the inside? I've got a few so full of rust and gunk I don't know how to get it squeaky inside. Especially the way the caps are flanged inward.

I have used white vinegar to clean the inside of the tanks with good results. You may need to let it soak for a few days on a heavily rusted tank.

    Wow nice job!

@HoldMyBeer ... pool acid will clean up the rust in a few minutes, some folks will say don't do it, but I have used it on over 15 tanks and always had good results.

Let me ask a question due to my lack experience. When you sanded and filled the dents i noticed a good bit of left over paint near the cap and bracket. Did you sand off the rest of the paint after filling the dents? Or did you just paint over it?
Did you sand blast or some other technique?

Sorry if this is basic or common knowledge but I have previously used local services for blasting and want to just do it myself if possible.

I did not remove all of the paint after filling the dents. This was just a practice job for me since I was not sure of the color match. I typically use a chemical paint stripper then I media blast the tank in my blast cabinet. In my experience using the chemical stripper saves a lot of time as compared to just media blasting the tank. Now that I know I have a good color match I would completely remove all the paint from the tank before I do any bodywork and primer for future jobs.

That red looks good. I have found rustoleum "sunrise red" 7762 is a pretty good match with Honda red.
