Cool bike, but I do have some advice from personal experience…Before you get started with a resto or any repairs you need to figure out a few things:
1- Is this the bike I really want?
2- How much will it cost just to get it mechanically sound?
3-What do I want to do with it after I get it running? (race it, cafe it, exhaust, suspension, etc)
Crunch some numbers and be realistic about it. I dumped about $1500 into a free 1980 kz550 years ago and realized that, to get it where I want it, it would cost at least another 2k…and for that price I could get a good running KZ1000 (the bike I would prefer).
Just food for thought bro.
Ragin' full on...
I knew you had this one in the bag, dog.![]()

Don't get teste with me, Scooter.
You know enough about the Internet to block someone, but not enough to put your thread in the right form? Maybe you should change your name to AK47"IDK".
It sucks to get old
The most expensive bike is a free bike.
Get a manual and read it and get it running and riding safe. The virago had an nice power delivery...somewhat similar to a lowe powered TL1000
Then after some miles on it (1000) figure how to improve it or make the changes you deem fit for your application.
Oh.....and if it works keep the gauge cluster. They represent a time in motorcycle history when a lot of the manufacturer's were utilizing high tech gadgetry of the time. Absolutely cool and totally 80s. If you don't want it let me know...as long as it works.
Funny how peoples perspectives differ. I despised those fangled instrument pods that cost damn near as much as a whole bike was worth after s few years of use. I always figured anybody that needed a light to tell them if they were in neutral, or what gear they were in probably shouldn't have been on the motorcycle in the first place. Bargraph RPM's? LOL!!! I may still have a pod from a 1983 GS1100ES, if I run into it it's yours.

Did you guys know that some people are like a Slinky?
They're not really good for much, put they put a smile on your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
