Boring build
I had gotten my hands on this old Onan generator for really short money in the spring and my aim was to have it ready for installation into my camper before Trikefest. It's probably from the 70's or 80's. I was building this at my house simultaneously as we were building the 480R at Dan's.
I thought the price was fair but after finding out what people pay for these the price was more than fair! It was extremely easy to work on with the only difficult part being sourcing parts for it. My brother (who knows everything) mocked me and told me not to waste my time, get a Honda, blah blah blah... He had me second guessing myself briefly but I just didn't have $2,000+ dollars to get in the Honda boat.
I had to weld the exhaust manifold which had cracked (a new one is $255!!) and rebuild the carburetor. It needed points as well, but other than that it just basically needed a serious degreasing. I was still second guessing myself after my brother's substantial amount of shite talking and concerned about how much time and effort I'd already put into this thing.
Upon the very first startup I already had a good feeling. It ran fantastic right off the bat. I was also concerned because I needed a needle and seat for the float and the only way to get the correct Walbro parts was $165!! You can't buy just the needle and seat, you have to buy the entire overpriced carburetor kit. I wasn't about to do that so I ended up looking at the pictures of Walbro needle and seat kits and found one that looked like it would work. It's definitely not the same as the one that was in there but it works!
After I knew it ran I installed it in the camper just assuming it would run the A/C and everything, and it certainly does. It's insanely smooth and quiet and the thing fires up so quickly it's almost startling.
Two downfalls of these; the facker makes some very noxious fumes, enough that I had to install a catalytic converter. Also it is THIRSTY! However it's quiet and powerful and for the amount I use it that's OK. I only just realized this about a month ago, but I can actually plug this pig into my house if I ever lose power and I'm good to go! We have some rough winters here so that's fantastic!
I was able to do a side-by-side comparison with a newer version from Onan, the direct replacement. When I saw it I was jealous, then I heard it run and it was very high strung and obnoxiously loud. This was the reason my brother was trying to steer me away from Onan, because he was familiar with the more modern offerings. I say modern but 2006 is like brand new to me. The really new ones could be much better.
So that's my boring build!
This was the day I got it home
