When I was younger I could fire up to five shots in a night and hit multiple targets, but latley my ammo is spent after just one shot. Muzzle velocity seems to have diminished as well. Maybe I need a new target?
It sucks to get old
I like to use 5. My 30-06 holds 4+1 so that's why I go by groups of 5 to sight it in. Obviously you'll go through a box pretty quick doing that. But I adjust as I go as I feel it's needed. If you are use to your gun you'll know if you made a good shot or if you jerked it on that shot or not. Especially in a controlled environment.
Five,3 is fine on a gun that is already a part of you and hasn't been bumped. But your gun should be a living part of you,too much practice is never enough.
Please help those who cannot help themselves.

I usually go the 5 shot method.
However, my "Red Ryder carbine-action, two hundred shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time"
Needs 10 shots to warm up the barrel to "shoot your eye out" accuracy.

When walking my group in to zero a new/newly mounted scope, I fire three rounds groups. Once I'm satisfied with the zero, I'll fire several more to make sure..
This target is from a couple of years ago when I was working up handloads for my 270. Rage was 100yds, the orange diamond was 2" square. If I recall, the top group circled in green was 9 rds. The bottom group circled in red was 6 rds after adjusting the scope to bring the group in. The low flyers on the green group were starting charge levels. The rifle shot tighter and tighter groups as the charge levels increased. I was very pleased with the results that day, and that cheap little Remmy 700ADL synthetic is still a go-getter!

i'll give you the very difinitive answer of,,,,, it depends. If its a piece you know well, in a place you know well, 3 should do ya. If you're working out something new, or working with variables like wind or brace, 5 is reasonable. 10 seems crazy to me. thats not sightin'. Thats just shootin'.

No trikes. Too old, too crippled. Unless I find one I can't live without!

Now that's a "loaded" question…
New optic routine:
-Laser boresight @ 100 yds
-3 rds
-adjust
-re-tighten mounts
-3 rds
-adjust
-re-tighten mounts
-5-10 rds to make sure it's good.and make me smile
Any gun already proven from last season:
-tighten mounts
-3 shots
-adjust if necessary
-3 rds
-adjust if necessary
-5-10 rds, first on paper then tannerite, squirrels, or something fun![]()
Ragin' full on...
Cold-barrel is a great idea. I'm gonna do that this season.
