    My 200X Project

Well, I snagged this rough 200X yesterday. Has been sitting outside for awhile. Guy said it ran when it was parked. The tank is in bad shape and the brakes need work. Carb will need to be gone through but think I can get it going without too much effort. Didn't really need this but the 200X just seemed like it would be a lot of fun.

Guy was wanting $250. I offered $200 but he was firm on the $250. He countered that for $250 he would include two extra aluminum wheels so I agreed to that. I don't think I did too bad. I've seen some better deals on here and some really nice ones for only a few hundred more but, meh, can't complain. I think I have something pretty solid to work with.

Previous owner had used JB Weld or something similar to plug up the leaks. Using a screwdriver, I popped the patches off and then ground the surfaces. Going to have to weld in some sheet metal over the big hole and spot weld the pin holes. Then treat the inside with rust remover. I think I can save it. Was considering a plastic tank but they are so expensive I thought it was worth a shot to fix this one. Its real straight so why not? Hoping I like the results.

Ive fixed tanks on jeeps and on 3 wheelers by soldering or brazing them. Get it real clean. I use an inert gas while grinding and brazing. The smaller tanks i use the argon from my mig or CO2 from my tap system, bigger ones just use exaust from another vehicle to displace the oxygen so nothin goes boom. Sometimes the metal can get pretty thin and can blow thru with the welder. Soldering can be a little trickier than brazing but can be done. Then i just grind/ sand it down till ya cant tell it was fixed

I'd not waste your time and get a plastic on. Knees will thank you later.

Thanks for the advice. Why not repair? Just likely to have future problems?

Besides the tank I would say you stole that bike. The plastics are there and look to be in good shape that saved you 300 dollars right there. yea its just not worth repairing them once they reach that state your best bet is to buy a plastic one.

As nice as that trike looks, I would personally try to find another metal tank somewhere. But then I'm a stickler for the original tanks. I feel the tank makes or breaks the look of an ATC.

    Nice score.

Seen some crazy high prices for a tank. Hope you get it up and running cheap. They are a lot of fun.

I am happy with the deal I got. Not sure I "stole" it though but I did alright. ATC's don't sell very well in this area and I knew the tank would be expensive to replace. Plus it is a little risky buying a non-running anything. That said, I feel confident I can get her going without getting upside down. I think I will still see what I can do with the tank before buying a plastic one.
