    Dean,

I remember your great editorials. So really the '87 did exist?

    Your quote:

"Up to about 1988, I can safely say that I rode nearly every production ATV that was produced up to that time, and many prototypes that never were built for production. I rode the Honda ATC200R, Honda ATC450R and many other "secret" projects. The 1987 ATC250R with white plastic? Yup, that one too."

    1986 ATC 250r, 1986 Tri Z, 1990 LT 500R "Quadzilla"

    Dirtbikes:

1994 KTM 550 MXC (yes its a two stroke...66 hp stock!)
    1988 Yamaha DT

As far as I can remember, I did ride the '87 ATC250R. It was purchased by an ATC rider/racer, who traveled across the U.S. boarder into Canada and bought it for his own use, and then brought it back into the States. We hooked up with him, and that's how I rode that particular ATC. As I recall, it was basically the same as the '86, but with different plastic. I don't have a clue to how many were built by Honda.

Thats some solid info Dean, thanks for sharing about the infamous 87 R.

Ever throw a leg over an 85 Tecate with a KX500 motor in it?

dean i really hope your still reading this forum post, i was just wondering what state you live in ? would you happen to have any old race photos of any prototypes? one question that im really curious about, someone told me there was supposed to be a dual sport ATC released, that was a 500cc 4-stroke and honda never got to release it, do you know any thing about this, or about any one ever making any ATC's dual sport? thanks please reply.

I live in Vista, California, which is about 30 miles north of San Diego.... birthplace of the ATV industry.

Any old photos I took during the years of publishing 3Wheeling would be back at the office, and I can tell you, there are thousands of them! There were times I saw some of these prototype ATCs, but was asked not to take any photo of them....

Dual Sport ATCs? Do you mean street and off-road? No way Jose. Honda hated the fact that some ATCs were converted to street use. What an insurance headache for sure on that one.

I try to read this forum when I can, but during the summer months, I am on the road so much, that I really don't have time to spend telling old stories. But I do check in from time to time. I'm glad Mike Coe is around here. He was there from Day one as well.

    Old Fart indeed!

I havent been here in a while, but when I saw your post I felt rejuvinated.
I started riding and racing 3 wheelers in 1984, I was 15....my first bike was a 84 200x. I had a curtis sparks cam and pipe on it as well as a bigger carb... after growing up with dirtbikes, the transition to 3 wheels was difficult in the beginning to say the least. I persevered however to the most enjoyable time in my life. while I cant claim the notoriaty of the "oldfart" and didnt have the luck to have been living in california back then, I did all I could do at the time for the sport of atv racing and riding.
The closest I ever came to my dream was at a AATVA National event in TN. I met Marty Hart, Stevie Wright, Jimmy White ,Mike Coe and Curtis Sparks along with several other of the best 3 wheeler racers in the world (ever).
I have pictures from that race as well as several others on the east coast I attended but didnt get to race in.
    I also owned in order: 1985 200x, 1985 250SX, 1985 AND 86 250Rs, and a 86 Kawasaki Tecate
PS, My youngest son is now 16 and has only just last week got to ride a three wheeler (1985 250SX) for the first time. after about twenty minutes of riding and trying not to run over his leg, he stopped to tell me it was the most fun thing he had ever ridden. (difficult at first) but extremely fun.
sorry about the long post..........just seeing someone I remember post made the experiences seem like they were yesterday.(almost)

I will for sure next week when I get back in town.......
Last weekend I went to Nashville TN for the AMA Supermoto races and had a blast. they had Quads on sunday and the other amateur classes that day too. I have to say that watching a Fourtrax 450 go around that track setup for supermoto was awesome. they must have been doing 90 mph at least around the oval.

    Hey Dean,
I was down in Imperial Valley last week and of course had to go to Camacho's for some of that good Mexican food. I ran into Brett Driscole & his wife. I told him about the website and that I traded post with you, a big smile came to his face. He said he still keeps in touch with you every once in a while.
He has taken over his fathers clothing store and does our shirts for our racing club. He said he has moved back down to IV after living in San Diego for a while.

You 2 ought to get together and come out and watch some desert racing, D38 is back with a vengence. The schedual is in the website below in my signature. Craig Corda comes out and runs sweep for us once in a while. Greg Row is back racing with us along with his son.

    Best Regards,

    Kirk Hester

Only a true, long-time resident of El Centro, California would know about Camacho's Mexican Food. The only way a non-local could ever stubble across this place if, they were totally lost! Brett and Mike Driscoll took me there years ago, and it was at night. To this day, I don't think I could find it even during the daylight hours. Great carne asada!

The Driscolls are just the best. I slept on Mike and Laural's couch so many times during our many desert trips, I lost count. We rode early ATCs, faster 250Rs, killer Quads, and Jet Skis by the score. Honda's, Yamaha's, Huskie's, Kawaski's, Tiger's.... you name it, they had them. Mike and Laural's old house/converted barn in Seeley, was reported to be haunted, and Tracey Dickson did not like staying there.... And to think, we got paid to do all that!
