All this hype over the 87 250r and 350x> Was there ever a 88 Tecate 3 prototype? Would it have the same fate as the quad with that pos 6 speed counterbalanced K.I.P.S motor?

Boy that's a good one. I really don't think KW had much on the drawing boards for an '88 250 3-wheeler. At that time, most of the manufacturers were flat scared of the CPSC, and didn't know what was going to happen next. 3-Wheeler sales were such a hot potato, that most of them didn't want to have anything to do with high performance, jumping, wheelies, or getting sideways. In fact, one P.R. rep asked us not to show any (Honda) in the air! Guys, the ATV industry almost went away for good! Certainly they threw in the towel on 3-wheelers in hopes to have a future market with Quads. Those were some really dark days... when the factories dropped out of racing, no support, no sponsorships, and limited ads in the magazine. All they wanted to promote was "farm" vehicles, camping, trailing riding and hunting.... not exactly my/our cup of tea. I guess that's why all of us on ATV Sports just wanted the book to go away, it wasn't fun any longer. I recall our last ride at El Mirage dry lake, when Phil, Bruce, Tim, Matt and I went out and rode what we had in the backroom, and called it a day. Haven't been in an ATV much more than a few minutes since that day, almost eighteen years ago....
I wish I could read one of those old magazines.Originally Posted by Howdy
I still recall shooting that cover layout for our first issue of 3Wheeling. We took all the Team BAP to 24th Street, in National City, just off the 5 freeway south of downtown San Diego. At that time, you could ride your ATC on a small section of flat sand, right next to the loading docks. It was fun for a quick 1-2 hour ride in the afternoon, but they had to close it. Things were getting really crazy there on weekends. During the various action shots, all of the team member were riding around, and I remember they ended up bending two or three rear axles that day, but no one crashed! If you look at the ATC in the air, you will notice there is a hole in his team BAPP/JT Racing jersey (arm pit). Joe (the head of Big Al's Performance Products), went nuts when he saw that cover shot and the shirt looked like crap! Those photos were taken in late 1979, probably in the fall.
That is some funny stuff right there, I never noticed it until now ( I bet others didn't notice it either ).Originally Posted by oldfart
Dean, Just wanted to Thank You again for the "Project ATC" and your presence here on the web site. I would like to personally invite you to Trikefest some time. I think you would find out just how gung-ho many of us are towards 3 Wheelers. It's like turning back the calender to 1985 or so. It will bring out the kid in ya. lol

Howdy, it is fun to read some of the posting here on this web site. Amazing how the interest is still around for the 3Wheeler..... Hope you are making progress on the ATC Project. I still have a lot of junk up in the rafters and stashed away. When I get my new shop built, and move from one garage to the other, I will get all this together, and go wild on e-bay. Remind me when the next Trikefest is, and where. You never know....
Dean, I have the Project ATC put together and running. That thing sounds better in person than words can say. WOW!! I haven't done much more than some polishing and cleaning so far. But I do get a lot of ooh's and aah's when people see it. I will email you more info on it as things come together in a month or 2.
Trikefest2007 will be June 21-24th, 2007 at Haspin Acres in Laruel, Indiana. Some of us get there a few days early to have extra fun. lol

Here is a photo I took back in 1978, at the first 3Wheeler and Odyssey Nationals, Lake Elsinore, CA. Guess who that rider with the number 2 plate is? Would you believe that is Mark Waxieldorfer! This was taken at the sand drag portion of the event. Curtis Sparks was also there, as well as Bob "Ace" Williams.
Dean, Thanks for checking in and posting from time to time. I can't speak for everyone but lots of us really enjoy your contributions.
I still have all of my old magazines from 80-87 but some of the choice photos are missing as I used to cut them out and tape them to my bedroom walls when I was a young teenager.
Any chance that you could post the famous photo of Dean Sundahl flat tracking the 1st gen 250R hanging off so far that he was nearly dragging his butt. It was a center fold 2 pager if memory serves and probably real hard to scan but thought I would ask.
It might be my all time favorite 3 wheeler photo.
Thanks again for your contributions,
Curtis.

Look at that, that is so cool. A scene from history in the moment that started the entire ATV competition craze. Awesome, just awesome.
YES! indeed Verry Cool!! I hope you can join us this year!! campfire storys are the best...even better at Trike Fest!!
That would be too cool. I went last year for my first time ever and I can tell ya, its unlike anything I've ever experienced. I thought I heard the sound of 2stroke in my ears for days after I got back, haha. It would be awesome if you could come, and if you dont have a trike by then I would have one you could use, and I'm sure everyone else would be more than happy to lend you theirs. Only a few more months...Originally Posted by oldfart

Brett,
Let me be the first to offer you a warm welcome to the site. We have many, many members with lots of young people that may not recognize you but there are plenty of "Seasoned" people like myself on here that will truly appreciate input from a pioneer & veteran of our 3 wheeling sport. I for one very much look forward to anything that you are willing to share with us from the good old days.
Curtis.
