Hey 3WheelerWorld, Mike Hallett here. I ran into Brett Driscoll at a D-38 dez race last weekend, swapped some old stories and Dean Kirsten's name came up and he told me about this site. He also said he and Dean both post now and again, and I thought I would give it a go. Tech talk ain't my deal, tales of the trail are more my style. Tracey Dickson and Dean Kirsten took a big chance when they offered me a seat, on the 3 Wheeling Magazine project 200x. I could never thank them enough. What a ride. The pic is from the San Diego Stadium in 1981, 3 lb. pneumatic suspension, Osha approved steel toe boots and all. I left a chunk of my hide around center field that day. I found out how good I wasn't.

    -Mike

P.S. My daughter typed this cause I suck with the computer.

Cool pic, Mike. Memories and reminders of the good old days of 3-wheeler racing are always read and re-read when I come across them.

Back then, all the locals and farm boy-racers secretly wanted(well...not so secretly) wanted to at least hang with those in the inner circle. To bench race, get tips, ....etc., while daydreaming of coming one step closer to riding with the names in the magazines.

That's why so many of us read these threads over and over again.

Having Brett, Mike Coe, Dean, and Scott Steger here is like a music junky getting on a guitar forum and being able to talk to Eddie Van Halen, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, the creator of Rolling Stone Magazine, and the owner of Fender Guitars Inc.

Brett, it made my weekend to see you and your folks at the race. It also inspired me to call Deano. It had been 20 years since we last talked. He's still a gem. In 1986, 3W Magazine attempted to set the first ATV endurance record with Tracey Dickson, the magazine staff, and myself on an 86' 250R Quad. We did 866.5 miles in 24 hours. Fud ran the event, and Dean still had my plaque! 24 years later I now have proof. He sent it to me last week. Thanks Deano.

On my racing budget, Goodwill had everything I needed. The pic is hardtail to racebike, my buddy Mark Webber aka Wingnut installed the high performance ATC swing arm and triple clamp with TM 125 forks, desert ready!

Hello, for those of you that are old enough, you might remember a publication entitled 3Wheeling Magazine, published by Wright Publishing Co, of Costa Mesa, CA. This magazine started in March 1980 with its first issue devoted to the ATC/3-wheeler market. At the time, I was the Associate Publisher/Advertising Director and co-creater of this idea (with Tom Chambers). We actually started covering the ATC market in issues of Hot VWs Magazine, back as far as 1976. We even covered ATC90 flat-track racing in the San Diego area during the late '70s.

My first "ATV" was a 1975 Honda US90, with steel front fender, and folding fork assembly. My last ATV was an ATC350X.

Up to about 1988, I can safely say that I rode nearly every production ATV that was produced up to that time, and many prototypes that never were built for production. I rode the Honda ATC200R, Honda ATC450R and many other "secret" projects. The 1987 ATC250R with white plastic? Yup, that one too.

Since the last issue of 3Wheeling/ATV Sports was published, I have not been on an ATV.... After spending the majority of my time riding, testing, building and loving 3- and 4-wheelers (nearly ten solid years), and seeing the ATV industry turn upside down by some legal morons, I could no longer enjoy my sport.

I got rid of all of my spare parts, riding apparel, ATVs and so on, in the late '80s. The only treasure I still hold on to, is my collection of factory rider helmets. This includes helmets worn by Dean Sundahl, Stevie Wright, Tracey Dickson, Mike Hallet, Mark Wiexeldorfer, Jimmy White and Mike Coe. I only wish I had one from Bob "Ace" Williams...

That is for now. I just thought some of you might like to hear from someone that was there in the beginning... before the CPSC, and lawsuit city. Sincerely, Dean Kirsten
A true sport and passtime is dead forever except in memories. Thanks for shedding some light on it.

Does anyone know what was the last issue of ATV sports? And what was the reason for its demise? DirtWheels and 3&4 Wheel Action survived. Why didn't ATV sports (formely known as 3wheeling).
