    1985 200s shifter play / adjustment?

Picked up an '85 ATC200s. First "S" I've ever had.

Its the up-shift pattern transmission and there seems to be a lot of play before the shift takes place. Im talking about the shift lever itself that your foot touches. You can prolly move it upwards 2 inches before you feel anything start to engage.

Every other tranny ive ever shifted seemed to engage much sooner. Any thoughts? Is this normal for these models?

I would also take a close look at the splines on the shifter and shifter shafts to make sure they not stripped

Thanks for the input but Clutch is adjusted and splines are perfect and tight. When you downshift the free play is minimal before it engages like its supposed to be. Its only when shifting up! And it does shift a bit hard into first from neutral , harder than the other gear changes. And that is also where the free play in the pedal is most noticeable.

Can you hold the shifter down in gear and the clutch don't slip it needs adjusted. I would try to adjust the clutch and see what happens.
