I think that's your timing advance system? Don't quote me on that. Either way, if it zapped you then you know ignition is most likely not the problem. There are only two other places to look- compression and fuel. Compression is unlikely the problem in your case so I'd be looking at fuel. Common fuel issues on bikes with metal tanks are the petcock screen clogging with rust or the gas cap losing its ability to vent thereby causing a vacuum in the tank which will not allow fuel to come out. To diagnose that problem, remove the gas cap and try to start the bike. If it starts then the gas cap could be the culprit. It's best to check that immediately after the bike dies because if you let it sit long enough it can eventually fill the carburetor again.
