    I like turtles......

I rescue turtles too, move 'em across the road in the direction they were going. We have the snappers here too, crabby bastards they are! I drag em across the road by the tail if they're really onry. They got long necks.

We have these up here too, called Soft Shell Turtles. Males are smaller about 8-9 inches, but the females can reach about 18 inches across. They're shells aren't as hard as painted turtles or snappers, actually kind of flexible at the back edges. They can be onry too, they can reach half way back on their shell to bite you. First time we discovered them when we were young a buddy picked one up a little forward of mid shell with his thumb and fore finger on the outer edges of the shell. The turtle reached back in the blink of an eye and grabbed him right in the web between the thumb and fore finger and wouldn't let go. He was screaming like a little girl.

I saw one of those not too long ago, i got out of the truck to check it out, as it was the first time I'd ever seen one, and move it out of the road. But this was no ordinary turtle. That thing jumped, and ran off down the road, down the bank, running on its hind legs faster than i ever thought a turtle could move.

Sounds like you encountered a teenage mutant ninja turtle.

I think there was a little talk about turtles back in the thread.

    It's like 'Groundhog' day.

EDIT. LOL. Back on page 12.

Dropping the engine to do intake seals. Hopefully the cack sucker friggin runs right after this, I'm getting tired of working on it with no improvements.

Japanese motorcycle builders have got to be the best overall motorcycle engineers on the planet. I love this bike, it really is functional art, it's great. However it's a very modern bike built with an ancient engine layout, which I personally like. You'd expect oddities with such a combination. Japanese motorcycles are definitely the best engineered and executed though hands down.

Have had 3 infinite g series cars and from the interior design to the performance very well thought out performance vehicles.

I would have agreed with you 100% a few years back, but lately I'm marveling at the European stuff. More enjoyable to work on, probably because the guys that put them together have bigger hands that the Japanese guys, but that Buell frame and front brake have long been the stuff that opens my salivary glands.

How long does that drive belt last and what are they worth?

They say to run the belt until it breaks. I'm approaching 20k miles. If memory serves me they're around $300 give or take.

I like really old Ducatis and Triumph twins of the unit construction variety.

I'm also partial to Suzuki GT series 2-stroke triples and Kawasaki inline fours especially the mid seventies Z900.

Most reliable bike I ever owned was a '84 Honda 750 Nighthawk. Never worked on it even one single time in three years except to change oil. I sold it to buy the Z900 and was unhappy in the long run

I use to think that too .......and it was the inline 4 that changed the motorcycling world that made it true back then. But....

Today's HD is not the HD of the past......not even close. Their fit and finish, performance, ride characteristics, etc.... are far more like any modern machine youll find in any dealer. My old 65 Sporty is not even in the same universe as my Electrglide. Just like BMW...who did everything airhead until the 80s..... eventually came out with the inline 4 and now 6....so can HD. But there's no need. The new Milwaukee 8 probably has a top speed and 60 to 80 and 1/4 mile times just like the new Goldwing Tour. My old GL1800 was smooth.....but my Electrglide at 80 to 90 mph is just as smooth......and at low speed the HD is superbly better than the 1800.

I do like my old GL1200 though.....one of my favorites.

I do believe what you're saying Nico because it's you, but most people I wouldn't take their word on this. I've had a VW car, a Ducati Monster, and a Triumph motorcycle. The Triumph and the VW both had typical European electrical systems which are terrible. Bad switches, poor connections, and bad wiring. Every European machine I worked on after that I noticed the terrible electrical systems. The Ducati I don't recall having any issues though.

I'm going to assume that's something that's been brought up to par if Europe is indeed producing a motorcycle better than Japan. Let's not forget that Japanese bikes are many times the cheapest as well, and they have a huge network of dealer support. All of that does come at the sacrifice of some "soul" in my opinion, but overall you have to hand it to them.

Knappy no offense but I don't believe what you're saying about the modern Hardly Ablesons, lmfao! This bike is an '09 so it's 9 years old. To me that's like brand new. It is likely I'm just used to what I'm used to and I've always worked on a lot of Japanese bikes I guess.

This bike has its quirks and therein lies it's charm. A bike without quirks in this equation equals less soul according to my math, so it all makes sense now right?

Also I have my fingers crossed the new intake seals will cure this bike's issues. The throttle body was disgustingly filthy and I ordered a brand new TPS just for shites while I'm in there. Focker really needs to start running right or else.

Not all the European stuff is good. The Mercedes I bought my wife was a POS money pit and pre-2000 Ducati are made to be fixed. It’s the KTM’s I’m impressed with. Enough so that I’m debating getting a 350 (gulp) F.

A guy with a new 6 Days France went out with us last week and was able to do everything my 300 could while burning less than half the fuel. I so love my smokers, but electric start, EFI, a weight right around my 300 and what looked to be about 50 miles per gallon? Impressive.... till rebuild time.

Anyway, I like working on the KTM’s a lot more so than the Jap stuff, but there good and bad built on every continent. As far as straight 4’s goes my 1978 GS 750 was a rock. They may have copied Kawi’s 900, but they made it even better.
    It sucks to get old
