Thx guys. 44 bucks would have save a lot of curse words. I saw an old manual coats machine at my scrapyard but it was bolted to a large plate and they sell by the lb. the condition did not justify a premium
Not today, but the last two days I have spent under two of our trucks. The first was my wife's '06 Silverado, it blew the steel brake line going from the ABS modulator on the frame rail to the rear axle...Simple enough, right?? Nope. In the process of addressing that I found at least 2 other lines that were leaking but hadn't completely blown out yet between the MC and ABS modulator... FUN! So I got a complete preformed stainless brake line kit for the whole truck from Napa for a little over $100. Every steel line in the truck has been replaced, what a job! So then I go to open the bleeders on the front calipers only to have the bleeders crumble (thanks to NY salt) despite every measure I could take to extract them. SO back to the parts store I go to get a pair of new calipers simply due to rotted bleeders, more $$$...yay! Problem now is the ABS modulator on the frame rail is airlocked and I am unable to get the rears to bleed. Fronts bled out good though. I have to take the truck to a shop and have the rears powerbled. I've tried everything I can, got the ABS pump to cycle in a dirt driveway probably 40 times and still no dice...
On to the next project, my 2000 Chevy k3500 needs a new pitman arm.. Lots of cursing, skinned knuckles, two cut lines, and complete removal of the plow frame and I got the steering gearbox out and old pitman arm removed yesterday. What a mother of a job! Now I have to get a new power steering cooler as well as a hydroboost line from the gearbox to the brake MC as I was unable to get those lines disconnected from the gearbox and had to cut them instead.... I've had about enough of working on vehicles for awhile..and I'm not even done yet.
UNCLE!

I think I put everything back the right way. Not bad for my first time, the camshaft is in the center case below the engine. This should make setting the points interesting.
The crankshaft has a hook on it. Anyone know what its for? Anyway Im going to fire it up later this morning and start the engine too.

Some advice needed.........
Working on my 94 Silverado today....replacing the starter...... and the one I purchased must have had an 10mm shafts because my stock cable wouldn't fit (I'm assuming stock is 8mm). No problem.......I'll just drill it a tick bigger and be good to go. But while drilling it caught and ripped the end right off. OK......still no biggie.......just get a new cable like I should have purchased as well. Only problem is is its a 2 gauge cable and all I can find on a sunday at the local places is 4 gauge. Truck doesn't need to be done today but I would like it done today so I'm wondering if going with the 4 gauge would be acceptable. Not very long.....just an inch or two over 36 inches....
I really want a new cable as I can feel the stiffness of the old one seem to "crack" when I straightened it out to measure it.
Thoughts?

I'm no electrical wiz, but having just worked on a bike that came from the factory with the bare minimum of gauge wire throughout (most of it fried) I can tell you it's go big or go home when it comes to wire size. Bigger wire make it turn faster, make the starter last longer and don't get as hot. If your 2 ga. wire was stiff imagine what the 4 will be like after a few years.
I gave up trying to drill connectors for the same reasons as you just did, use a die grinder, it actually faster.
.
Went to this public auction yesterday of around 200 no reserve government vehicles and bought a 2007 F350 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel Super Duty truck with 97,000 miles, step boards, and an aluminum tool box on it for $5200.00 . The low NADA trade in value is around $9500.00.
