It's on the very back burner for now. Bottom end was very nasty. It did turn out to be mostly oil crud and I was able to clean it up with several overnight soaks of Seafoam. The small end of the piston rod is still iffy though. I started a thread in the quad section, so if I ever get back to it I'll post there.

You northern dwellers may have experienced humidity in your travels but living in it is something all together different.

It's the middle of December and everything in the shop here is sweating, including me and it's only in the mid 70's. The shop floor is a slip hazard because it's wet enough to squeegee and everything from the floor to the ceiling has a layer of moisture on it, including tools in the box even though it's closed. The whole roll of paper towels is damp, can't even get a dry one of those. I have to put cardboard on the shop floor to keep my clothes from getting wet, at least until the cardboard is soaked.

I spent much of the year much farther north and hoped I'd miss all of this crap. Dang it.

^ Argh that sounds like a nightmare...I truly dislike humidity. Nothing like sweating in the shower...barf. I'm glad we're relatively dry up here...more so in the winter too. All your tools are going to be rusted up, no? I grew up in the Southern Ontario, Niagara Falls region and the humidity really affects me now when I visit.

These Chinese switches for my XR...total gabage.

I should have listened to my wife.

Nothing lined up...... too much powder coating on the inside wouldn't let the throttle turn freely… a wrong connector…. brake light switched didn't line up....... I had to grind off metal because there was too much on the inside and it wouldn't mount t correctly on the handlebar……. like a kid made it.

    I'm going to the dealer.

Forgive my ignorance, what am I seeing here? Is that a metal tank cover over plastic? Why did you have to replace the OEM switch?

Actually it's a plastic housing that covers the plastic gas tank.

From my understanding I don't believe any motorcycle with an exposed plastic gas tank is street /DOT legal. I guess in this case with the plastic cover it skirts the law and becomes legal.

Also the switch would inadvertently try to start the bike after it was running.

Got back from my honeymoon, crashed wife's car, lost my whole key ring of equipment keys and shop keys, then yesterday I had to put my long time four legged pal down last night. Poor guy was ate up with cancer, collapsed on the floor the night before last, wouldn't get up. Wife took him to the vet and no good news. Miss the little fella

Sorry about the bad luck 90nut.

More importantly...... sorry for your loss.

Not bashing you knappy, but I've never understood why people buy cheap china replacement parts, especially for something like a Harley. At least the China made Harley branded parts have better quality control then the cheap china crap.

Did you try disassembling and cleaning the old switch?

So I replaced the rear brake lines in my 99 Sierra 2500, pulled the EBCM and resoldered all of the contacts for the ABS relay and solenoids to remedy the biblical amount of codes I had related to the EBCM, reinstalled the EBCM, then did a preliminary bleed on all 4 wheels. Went to clear the codes so I could do the automated ABS bleed and I still have one code, I may have to pull the EBCM and try resoldering the relay contacts one more time.

Previously I had noticed that neither the ABS or Brake light were coming on during the initial starting of the truck like they should. Found out there is a ground connection to the frame under the drivers door, cleaned and reconnected that. Still have the C0265 EBCM relay circuit code after cleaning the ground (solidifying my need to pull the ECBM and re-check the relay solder joints).

But alas, still no ABS and Brake light....

When I bought the truck I found out a couple months later when I had to slam on the brakes for a deer that the ABS system had been disabled by the previous owner by removing the underhood ABS fuse...ratbastige!!

Now, with this still firmly implanted in my largely unoccupied cranial compartment, I was thinking "I wonder if those particular bulbs ever burn out?" "I've never heard of that before, but I suppose anythings possible".... BUT, being the untrusting SOB that I am when it comes to buying used and finding this type of sh!t after the fact, I'm also thinking "That fudgestick wouldn't take the time to disassemble the instrument cluster and take the bulbs out, would he?

    Weelllll....:

I was going to post a pic, but apparently my upload kept failing

At any rate, yea the d-bag did take the cluster apart and removed the 2 bulbs...Un f-n believable.

Problem is, I can't be certain that these two bulbs complete the diagnostic circuit for the ABS system and without the bulbs I don't have a complete circuit.

    Off to the boneyard.....

Scooter, kinda sounds like something i would do- I personally can't stand ABS and would pay extra not to have it. The almighty though (jk) thats watching over us says its to dangerous to learn how to control a skid.
I do remember those damn frame clips that held the brake lines to the frame, not fun.... The second time those lines were replaced the new one's just got zip-tied to the old lines (that truck the body mounts were rotting through the cab) but needed brakes just a bit longer. (91 gmc stepside) RIP
You mentioned "fudgestick" what comes to mind is those chocolate fudgical ice cream pops, loved them things-been yrs hmmmm yup now i gotta run to the store. geez thanks scooter
