I got the new stator in for my XL600R. Third one I've bought after the OEM went out.

OEM on right, Caltric installed, Electrosport second left, and the new Rick's on left.

    Attachment 269249

This is getting really old. Luckily, I've only been stranded once and was able to push/coast it back home. The last failure happened at home as I was getting ready to ride. OEM lost the ignition source coil, Electrosport lost lighting, and the Caltric lost ignition.

The last failure with the Caltric stator was the source coil actually became loose in the stator and was just bouncing around. I put some arrows to show the gap.

The box the Rick's came in says 'Made in USA' and there's some hand writing/engraving on it. Any viewer will also notice how different some of the stators look. There's more than one way to skin a cat and stators can be configured in multiple ways. The Caltric mimicked OEM, but the others are 'high output' stators with an additional lighting capacity.

At one point, I media blasted the magnesium cover and painted it but that didn't hold up well at all. I'm going to have another shot at painting it, but will put a rougher finish before. I've had this bike down to the bare frame and know everything very well. I really like the bike but the electrical problems are really having me thinking about selling it.

For anyone who doesn't know, these 1980's Honda dual sport bikes have three electrical systems. The CDI is AC powered by the stator, the headlight is AC with a separate voltage regulator, and there's the low power DC system for charging the battery and working the street legal bits. All the US versions of these bikes from that era are kickstart only. The battery is tiny and only there so the turn signals and horn work properly, and so the tail light will stay on if the engine isn't running (safety).

I got a bicycle ride in today.

    Attachment 269253

Done my part to pick up road litter.

    Attachment 269254

That left a good size hole in the tire but I had some boots.

    https://www.parktool.com/product/eme...tire-boot-TB-2

    Attachment 269255

I also got a fist full of Marlboro points thanks to lazy, cigarette smoking, litter bugs. I've gotten several things from the Marlboro catalog over the years and didn't have to buy a single pack. If Bud Light cans had redeemable codes...

Plastic bags and bottles, bale twine, glass bottles, aluminum cans, horse syringes, assorted plastic and metal junk…

I was telling my wife the other day that I’ve picked up at least three pickup loads of trash off 2 acres of relatively clean (for Mexico) land over the past two years. Most of it was within the first couple of months, but every time I till soil, or even walk across the lawn I’m picking up plastic bottle caps, small pieces of broken glass etc. I’ve even paid kids to go walk down the road and collect the cans and bottles, and the following weekend there are cans and bottles scattered down the side of the road. This is not a public road, this is a road shared by half a dozen property owners. It’s my neighbors and their friends that are doing this. These are supposedly educated people!!! PIGS!!!!!

    Hmmmm

It kind of sounds like they got it figured out.

Some people are just miserable people. They take it personal when someone picks up the trash, like it's an affront to them, and they'll throw out even more. The only way to handle those types is with a strong hand and not to change their mindset, because that really can't be done, but to correct their behavior.

50 years later and this commercial hasn't had an impact.

Drinking a celebratory six pack of Yuengling.

Did I mention that I hate open pipes with no baffles? I didn't used to, but after trying to tune a Super E with short Samson Streets sans baffly-majiggers and having my head down there on the other side of the bike trying to fine tune the timing while getting my eardrums blasted out at 2200rpm, I pulled the trigger on a new 2-into-1 Supertrapp for the Dirtbag Sled.

What a frigging huge difference. Runs better. Idles better. Sounds better. Not loud at all.... And messing with the air/fuel screw actually makes a noticeable difference so you can tune it correctly. I can even hear the "whirrrrrr" of the cam and pinion gear meshing together when it's running.

New topend..... New Cylinders, pistons, rings, valves, pushrods, rockers, tappets, tappet blocks, cam, breather gear, oil pump, cam bearing, all associated gaskets and seals

New external programmable ignition box, pickup, coil, wires.

Rebuilt the brake calipers, replaced rotors and pads on both ends of the bike. New rear tire.

I can now brag that I know an Evolution motor inside and out and pretty much 90% of a Softail chassis as well.

Going to replace some lighting for the passing lights and replace the speedo because the odo crapped out long before I bought the bike and that's how I gauge when to hit the gas station because there's no fuel gauge on a Fatboy.

Probably put the seat back on tonight and clean my greasy fingerprints off the whitewall tires

Should be ready for daily commute and a few long road trips by next week. My wife is sick of me driving her new Subaru to work to save gas and I can go back to looking like more of a hellraising meat-eating, grunting/farting dirtbag instead of a latte-sipping, rice cake nibbling, socially conscious, woke MF'er from Colorado. No offense to Colorado.

Let's hope I stop thinking about buying this new hardtail frame I got on my GleeBay watchlist. I don't need that kind of self-abuse in my life but a chop project would be fun. Wife thinks it's stupid. What does she know anyway?

It's part of my new "No mask/No passport required" lifestyle. Outlaw Sh*t and some fishing for the win. FTW.

I might get a new bicycle too

Yep, same pricks that feel obligated to drag a key along the side of your brand new vehicle because they don’t feel like working hard enough to pay for one. “We all own the earth, so if I want to throw my all over it I’m entitled”.

I fantasize about going Rambo on these people, but they must know they’re doing something wrong, because they never do it with anybody’s around to see it.

Right? For hard working people, it's difficult to understand how anyone can think that way. It's probably because they were raised to have a victim mindset instead of a strong will. They'll never enjoy or appreciate anything in life, even if they won the lottery.

I think the EVO represents a time when everything came together for HD. Simple, proven internals, reliable, and realistically had enough power in stock form there wasn't a 'need' to have more. The factory use of the Keihin CV carb really helped too.

From there it turned into a bigger is better race and now many people set the cruise at 90mph or higher and miss most of where they're riding through. Hurry up and get to the destination type of riding instead of the ride itself. That's why I still ride dual sport bikes and take gravel road trips.

I enjoy powerful bikes, but the US is a great place to explore and actually experience. When I see someone actually loaded down and traveling on older iron, I know that person gets what riding is about. Newer used bikes aren't exactly expensive, so that's not a real reason why someone would travel on an older one.

Nice exhaust........bikes got a sick stance!

Open pipes don't sound cool..... they sound like somethings broke. A little throaty rumble is OK but on my touring rigs I like a stock exhaust......so I can hear the radio and make calls and stuff.

    100%

Recording AFR on a dyno shows as much. From stock to broke for only a few hundred bucks.

Open pipes burn more gas too

    And thanks

If I had more disposable cash, I would build a Vicla for cruising around town. Cholo bikes rule.

You’re still allowed to smoke outside in CA????

As a cigar guy, maybe you can appreciate this.

A buddy of mine brought it from Cuba about 15 years ago and I still haven’t managed to break it even though I use it constantly. It’s supposed to be Fidel Castro. Apparently this is a form of art that allowed the citizens to mock him without being imprisoned. I still haven’t figured out exactly how it is they are making fun of him, the guy who gave it to me said it was because the ashes came out of his head, but I’m thinking it might also be that it looks like he’s sucking a joint (no, not that kind you millennials out there) when you put the cigar in his mouth. Kind of like let’s go Brandon, just more useful.
