My moms ex used baking soda and warm water and it instantly stopped the burning. I mean i had burns and it still hurt but as soon as the baking soda was applied it stopped the acid from causing further harm and it felt much better.
Im not saying its a miracle if something like that happens you should call the poison hotline or go to the ER immediately.
The problem with using any kind of acid on metal is that the acid attacks not only the rust but it also attacks the good metals.. regardless of the negative health issues acid is also a environmental hazards..
Try the evapo rust or the one from rustolem I guarantee you won't be disappointed..not only can you reuse the stuff you can dump it down the drain when done.
I believe that molasses also has a chelating agent and its not harmful to your health or the environment, but it takes a pretty long time to work like a week, but what the hell if ya plan it right what's a week's wait for your health and safety of the environment..

Three moles were burrowing through the ground and the first one said, "I smell pancakes."
The 2nd one said, "I smell pancakes too."
The 3rd one said, "All I smell is mole asses."

I used apple cider vinegar and it removed most of it. I have my eye on the evapo rust when I am ready to finish it and get the last bit of flash rust out.

if you paid attention to my post you would have realized thats what the baking soda is for. if you keep an eye on it vinegar and a capful of acid will do a better job faster and wont damage the good metal. also its not difficult to dispose of properly.

Oh my gosh where do I start . Well for you Indy I'll make it short. For any acid to work it can't be first neutralised with baking soda or it wouldn't work, it would be neutralised. Acid works by eating through the metal.. muriatic is some bad stuff man that is my only point here.

He didn't say to neutralize the acid before rinsing. He was saying to do the acid rinse, neutralize it, then repeat the process.

I understand that scooter, my only point with this whole rust removal thread is the ill effects of using any kind of acid. The experts contend that a week dillution of muratic acid will actually speed up flash rusting plus the mixing of other certain chemicals and any kind of acid could be deadly.

like i said everyone has their own methods. ive done research on this method im not just experimenting ive done it this way for years. first muriatic acid and vinegar mixed causes no reactions. second i dont neutralize the acid before hand did you pay attention at all? the baking soda solution is to completely stop the process preventing any damage to the clean metal.
I've don this method for 15 years and i have a few sets of sled exhausts that i did this to many, many years ago that have been taken care of and they are still in great shape. its a proven method and i know many other mechanics that use the process. like i said if you prefer your way thats fine but dont try telling me what im doing doesnt work or is dangerous. i use safety and i properly dispose of the waste. its not rocket science.

Dom, Barnett-I understand what you guys are saying. Without mentioning too much about the beauty of this area and my 'environmental awareness', I've always neutralized it, before taking it to the hazmat station, (I'm directly above some of the best drinking water in the country, possibly even the entire world).
I don't use much, but it's a pain to deal with. So I'll try the rustolem product next. Thanks for the tip knappy.

You want to read something I find fascinating? If the environment is your thing:

Solipsism at its best right here. And if you love the environment so much then how about you stop riding around on machines that have emission control from almost 40 years ago? no? didnt think so....
