Well, that is a semi long story but I will try to shorten it a bit. One reason is because one of the clubs I race with is a vintage club, and this bike fits in their GP1 category, which is basically 76 thru 80, which is the category I wanted to race in having already done the 74 model class back in 92/93 with AHRMA when I raced a 74 CR125, 74 CR250 (which I parked after a few races and got a 74 YZ250), and a 1974 1/2 GP Maico 400 GP, and I never wanted to race a bike with only 4" of rear wheel travel again, especially because I broke my hip at one of the first races of the new season when some guy fell right in front of me while I was going around 40 mph, and when I ran over his bike, my rear suspension bottomed out so hard it kicked the rear up and threw me over the bars, and now I have a nice fancy 8" long piece of medical grade stainless screwed to it.
Another reason is that of all the bikes made during these years, the 1980 YZ250 was one of the very best IF one was capable of riding it as it needed to be, which I certainly can't, but I didn't care about that when I bought it. It was voted bike of the year by the magazines, and one of their test riders pulled 4 holeshots in 6 races in the pro class at Saddleback with their test bike in box stock form.
This particular one has also been modified a bit, and my guess is that it was done by DG back in the day, because when I removed the reed cage to install a new carb holder, I saw 2 Boysen ports in the intake tract that didn't come on these originally, the oil level is also professionally stamped on the clutch cover which it also wasn't originally, the stock expansion chamber has around 30 mm added to, and, it has an original Answer silencer that was made back then, plus it has a period correct DG sticker on the original front fender. The rear shock was also modified by White Brothers and the damper rods were modified by Scott's Performance, so my guess is that some high skill level rider owned it and raced it back in the day.
Another good bike for that class is the 250 Maico, and they are great bikes, and far, far easier to ride than this one, but I wanted a Yammie (cuz the Kawi's weren't as good) and this one just happened to be available at the time I started looking for one. I found it during an online search and instantly called the seller and bought it. Unfortunately it was back east so I had to have it shipped out here which cost me around $700.00.
...and also because I can easily do this coming out of any corner if there is enough traction!
.................................................. .
Here's a better view of it. The tank decals were bad so I thought it would be entertaining to put GERITOL on it since it sort of fits my "age group", plus it gives me an excuse for looking like a squid when I ride. This photo was taken immediately after I raced in the recent Lake Elsinore GP, which I actually, surprisingly finished, but I only rode the shortened Friday course.

Pretty cool stuff Barnes and welcome back.
I know a guy Roger Johnson that does our machine work that races flat tracks in a few different leagues. He's in his mid 60's and won a championship a few years back..
Pretty cool that you old time racers still enjoying the thrill of racing and the ability to do so ..

Vintage MX stuff is H..O..T...Hot right now.
With my back condition I can't ride them like they're supposed to be ridden.... So I just look at them now. The closest I'm going to get off road now is either a KLR or the Africa Twin...... and mainly for on-road use with some limited off road . The KLR....now retired.....may be my choice. With its 6 gallon gas tank, Simplicity of a single, and low price tag it's very inviting
