    What the heck is it?

I have 2 early 80's atc185's both with a shaft that sticks out just above and in front of the shift shaft. One of them still has a letter "N" still there.
What is this for? neither one has a lever on it and it's not a common size so a shift lever wont work. Where can i find the proper lever that belongs on it?

That is the shift indicator. There was a little white plastic ring with a red bump that went on that shaft. When the red bump pointed at the N cast into the case, the transmission was in neutral.

I think they put that on the early auto clutch trikes so you could tell when you were sitting still where neutral was.

There is no lever that goes on that. It is a shift indicator, as you shift that shaft turns and there is supposed to be a white plastic wheel with a leedle on it that points to the N you are talking about. The N stands for neutral, so when the needle is on the N you know you are in neutral.

The sad part is they put it at the bottom so the only way you could see it was to be under the 3 wheeler. Maybe it was for the people the 3 wheeler would run over. This way they could see it was in neutral then. lmao j/k
