That's a method, I've seen used, to keep the gasket from getting blown out from compression. Supposedly it gives the gasket something to grip onto, as opposed to the smooth surfaces. I've only seen it done to very narrow gasket surfaces before. Why it was done here, in such a wide area, is beyond me. Don't the air-cooled R's use copper head gaskets? If so, absolutely no reason to do that on this application.

Agreed and I have cylinders on my shelf that have the same marks but they are punched in a linear fashion down the side edges of the cylinder. When I examined this motor, that cylinder was absolutely destroyed. At first I thought those were gasket stay marks but I honestly think that cylinder was chucked up in a vice, something was dropped on it or someone took a meat tenderizer to it.
