Hey guys new to the trike community I purchased a 1982 atc 250r and I'm curious if I should try restoring it to the way it originally came or modifying it and making it better then it was originally idk if that will hurt the value or make it more desirable to average enthusiasts any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated thanks

Hey I'm in the process of dong an 84 250r and parts are hard af to come by that's are of any quality I say go new gen

Up to you really. In order to restore it to original to the point it's truly valuable, you're going to shell out some big dough. Expect to spend $8,000 building a trike worth $3,000 regardless of which style build you choose. I love stock OEM, I can build my own aftermarket bikes, and I do. But if I see an all OEM bike me wanty!

If you do decide to go all OEM, you'd better become an expert quickly. We will pick apart every nut and bolt you use if you decide to use the word "restoration", so realize what you're getting yourself into, lol! Either way, it's a fantastic hobby to get into.

Ya that's what I've ran into lol but my thing is I don't wanna hurt the value of it do u know if any 83-84 parts r interchangeable with the 82 like swing arm and forks?

As far as I know the only difference in yours to mine is the kick starter shaft

Well it seems to be in pretty good shape for its age plastics don't even have any cracks just scratched up the only thing missing is the headlight bezel and rear grab bar other then that's it's pretty much all original I got it from the original owner he's just older now and had no use for it

Ok I know the 83 and 84 had about 2 more inches of travel front and rear and had a bigger fuel tank and that makes them more desirable from what I understand

Not much is interchangeable between the 81/82's and 83/84's. You can swap the second gen front end on to the first gen chassis, but nothing from the rear of the second gen will swap between the two generations. Your best bet for a suspension upgrade in the rear is a better shock and an extended swing arm. The engines are the same except for the shifter shaft.

Ok that sounds about right I wanted to try to keep it as original as possible but at this point I think that's not really an option lol ive heard people say on these to remove the swingarm and take it to a fabricator to have it extended bcuz its gonna be hard to find an already extended swing arm for a decent price

Yes that's a decent idea. I extend my own but I also fabricate. Just make sure he uses a jig and it's kept completely straight. 1/32nd of an inch on the swing arm turns into a lot when measured at the wheels.

What kind of riding do you do? For all around every day riding 2.5" to 3" might be all you need.

I ride mx I've been riding dirtbikes my whole life so I go from track to desert to mountain trails and sand dunes lol this is pretty much just gonna be a toy and weekend project I work at a kawasaki dealership as a technician with 7 years in the industry but these are a little older then what I have all my experience with lol do u think it would be easier to take the whole trike to them to have it extended?

If they prefer, that would be up to them. They shouldn't need it. Regardless you might want to get the swing arm bolt free ahead of time. They can fight you sometimes and it would be very expensive to pay someone by the hour to do that.
