Repairing axle thread

Hey all,
Picked up this nos 250r axle today. But the thread is buggered. I have no idea what happened to it but I need to get it fixed. Best way to fix it??

I think I’d put the rusted end (just the end) in a bowl of apple cider vinegar check on it every three hours or so for 10-12 hrs. Wipe off threads with rag occasionally, then you’ll see how much metal is actually left to play with.

Once the rust is off and you can tell if there is any tread to work with, running a forming die over it might help.

You do need to get the rust off first but I would not use a threading die. No guarantee you will pick up the lead and you'd end up cutting new threads which will ruin it.

Instead get a metric thread file and work from the good threads out. Thread files won't really 'remove' material so much as push it back where it goes.

IF, you have enough material under the rust AND you can clean it out enough to have the original lead, THEN you could run a die nut over it. Personally, i would just use the file and then grease the snot out of it and GENTLY run the castle nut all the way down. Don't force anything.

The only other alternative to save that axle would require a lathe and welder. If you have access to one, you can turn it down about a hundred thousandths below you minor diameter and weld it up. The turn it to you major diameter and rethread. If the original center drill is not damaged it'd be a breeze. Otherwise it will have to be indicated in true and re-drilled.

Thanks mate, I just spoke to my buddy he said the same with cleaning the rust off. I might clean the rust then give it to my machinist buddy to fix on the lathe. Or even how about a thread restorer that taps from the good section backwards?

Welding is an option but wouldn't the heat damage the temper of the axle?

Apple cider vinegar, wire brush and then evaluate. Thread file is a great idea.
