84 R running rich, waaaay rich.

I have searched the forum and found a thread about jetting the air cooled R's but I am still trying to make sense of my machine. Starts and idles beautiful. 1st kick all the time. 155 PSI compression, brand new crank seals and gaskets. Did a crankcase pressure test and it held 6 PSI without the needle wavering. So, I believe I have covered all of my bases as far as internal condition of my engine. When I ride the trike, it has absolutely pathetic power, and almost no get up and go. Lots of exhaust smoke, have my fuel mixed @ 32:1. I have the carb pulled off again to see what may be my issue. Stock jetting from what my Honda manual and this site tells me is 130 on the main, and 50 on the pilot. I was convinced I was going to find a huge main jet in my carb, but I discovered it had a 125 main in it! How the heck is this trike running so rich??!! Stock exhaust, stock airbox. Pulled the plug this evening after a couple passes down my street and the plug is actually wet. Anyone have any pointers to what I should look into? I'm at a loss. How can it run that rich with a main jet smaller than stock? Carb is a PE30.

Did you check your float height? Clip position? What is your air screw at right now? Are your reefs fresh and have you checked them to see if they are sealing?

Could be any one or a combination. Hopefully it’s induction related and not electronic.
    It sucks to get old

Float height is 20mm, clip position is 3rd groove from top. Moved it all the way up just to see what it did and it made midrange a little bit better but still not right. My air screw is at 1.5 turns out. I have not checked my reeds however they were new back in March. Guess it wouldnt hurt to check those again. I checked the timing and it was right on the money.

Get it warmed up and as you are going down the road turn your choke on and report back if the bog was worse or better.

My 85 250r ran like what you described. I changed everything else with no result.Put on a new coil and it runs great.

If it's all stock, does the air get pulled through the backbone of the frame? If it does, is that plugged (wasp nest, mouse nest, etc.)? Also wasn't the stock oil ratio at 20:1? If so, since you're now at 32:1, you're running a higher percentage of gas per volume of fuel going through your carb. That would make it run rich although I think the 125 main jet would compensate for the different oil ratio.

I did that, choke definitely makes it worse.

Yes it pulls air through the frame, I even ran it with the airbox lid off. It ran better, but still not good.

If your carb and jets are perfectly clean then I am with 300r. I would start testing your electrical components or replace them.

Update on my issue guys. I will have it back together tomorrow after work I hope. Carb is perfect and reeds are perfect. I did find something that I hope is the culprit and I will find out tomorrow. I checked out my coil, when I pulled the plug wire off the plug, the wire came disconnected from the coil with no effort. The little rubber boot was the only thing holding the wire to the coil. I looked at the end of the plug wire and the coil stud was barely touching one strand of wire in the plug lead! I will report back tomorrow. Thanks for the input!

That’ll do it. I bet she hauls the mail now. Be sure to go back to stock jets and re-tune.
