If you think you can do a successful conversion for less than you can buy a ready-to-ride 250R, you're going to be in for a shock.
Why do you think you got a 'steal' on the bike to start with?
Other than all that, the overwhelming majority of sane people will NEVER ride and ATC500R to it's full potential. That requires young riders who've not come close to death, or riders on hard drugs. Crusty Demons of Dirt would've put something like a ATC500R to the test, but those days are long gone.
Riding wheelies in a smooth field versus jumping over a house are two separate worlds. Anyone that can hang the throttle open on a CR500R for long distances has balls that are almost illegal nowadays. If they worked in porn, their balls would come with a drowning advisory.
