    Thank you.

What's cool about these kind of threads is that there is nothing special going on. No custom billet triples or $2000 pie cut titanium exhausts or exotic big bore kits..... just simple stuff that anybody can do with no special tools or no special skills. We've all done it so we can relate.

I think most of all what I have learned is that even as penny pinching as I'm being.....It's very expensive to get things done right. I have a million dollars in labor invested into it but as far as the outflow of cash I've tried to minimize that as much as possible.

    Got some more tidbits plated.

That swingarm bolt is about as good as I can get it. The acid stripped it nicely but it is pitted from the rust that was on it. It looks like some of the plating filled it up.

After 2.5 hours of sanding, I'm done

Funny thing is.......the better it looks in person, the shittier it looks in the picture. I'll probably 2500 grit sand it again, then clear it....so I don't have to go through this anymore.

Spa day for some rubber & plastic parts.

Methyl Salicylate (wintergreen oil) for the rubber and hydrogen peroxide for the plastic.

After the nice boiling, it's all freshened up and ready to go for the next 40 years.

Hey, just made it through all 20 pages of this over the last couple weeks. I wanted to say thanks for letting us follow along with your project. I have an 85 200x sitting out in the barn that i have thought about rebuilding. It is good to know what is actually involved in a project like this. Keep up the good work!

Just went through all 20 pages myself too. ALOT of tips for a guy with limited mechanical experience.

    Thank you.

I often go back and reread pages to see where my mind was at at the time. I can't really pinpoint when I went from "not going to paint anything" to painting almost everything. One thing I know is the little things are very time consuming to get right.

This is coming up on 2 years now. Most people get them running....then grow tired of them in the time I've been working on this. If I was on it all the time it would get done quicker for sure. But like most people.... we work on them when we have the time and the desire to. Cleaning gross items and plating them is not a romantic endeavor......it's boring and messy and mundane...but it is rewarding when finished

Time is what makes the machine worth the high sell cost. Rusted busted old junk is still just that and not worth covid prices in my mind. That lower chain roller you could use a new roller one off a quad. I run YFZ450 ones down there where the slider use to be.

    Thanks Aaron

Paint seems to have cured nicely.

I put a couple of things back together just so I can feel like I'm making progress. This rescue will sit for a while now as summertime and summertime plans are in full swing for me now.

    A little before and after.

Put the swinger on. All greased up...nice smooth action.

The axle is really bugging me. Next to everything plated and finished..... all that rust is an eyesore. I know i was thinking about other options but I may remove it to plate it.

I'm working on an '85 350x. I know the struggle lol, been 10 years, but finally got back to it. I have a like new original exhaust from an '85 200x i used to own. It has probably 10 hrs on it and my dad had it hung in his garage ever since when I replaced it with a kerker header back in the day. Just thought I'd throw that out there if your'e needing one.
Oh, and I wanted to mention that I had my axle powder coated and it looks great, I'd definitely recommend sprucing that axle up, makes it look that much more detailed. Good luck with your build!

That's good to know…... that I'm in like minded company.

Probably the biggest thing I'm not looking forward to doing is cleaning up the rear fender. I could see that taking a lifetime to get cleaned up.

Thank you for the lead on the exhaust. If mine doesn't work out, I'll be contacting you.

Yes, the rear fender will be time consuming for sure. I just went ahead and bought a new maier for my X. I'm a patient person, but not THAT patient!

My 350x is getting some tlc also. It has been in pieces since the fall. It is driving me crazy that I just cannot get enough free time to finish this up.
I need about 2 uninterrupted days and all of the parts already at hand.

    Hey Knappyfeet,

I was wondering the mixture of the methyl salicylate/water and the hydrogen peroxide/water mixture. Did you use the cream full strength for the chain slider? Your parts look great and I'm thinking of doing the same.

Thanks for posting all this info, it's extremely helpful!
