    84 200x restore to factory or 86 clone?

    Restoring a 84 and debating on cloning it to an 86. Which would be worth more in the end? Original or clone? I obviously like the looks of the 86 better but don't want to kill the value. I don't know if I would ever sell it but it is a consideration that needs to be weighed.

    Thanks for any input.

    Fix up the 84- sell it- put that $ towards an 86.

    1ST gens are nothing but issues by now. There are 3 main things with them and most do not know how to fix any.

    #1 kicker gears...i do have a fix but i had doing it. Its a 2 hour ordeal to back cut the gears and shim correctly if you send to me.

    #2 the axle sprocket hub assembly's are always worn down and loose, it was a stupid design again. I have a 300ex axle fix but that requires being able to weld. I can make weld on sleeves and the rest if up to you.

    #3 is the rear brake assembly on the motor...dumbest thing ever. I have come up with a fix but a custom foot lever needs made and it can get costly if you cant think weld and machine.

    I own a 86 trx200sx which is the semi auto motor copy of the 2nd gen 200x. I will say everything about that motor up top is SOOOO much nicer and easier. You can adjust the valves with out a freaking feeler gauge too! It was a great motor. Yes there are some hard to get parts but the top ends are 100% the same as trx200sx atvs so jusy buy as many 500 junkers as you can find when building a 2nd gen 200x. I'd never waste my time on a 1st gen 200x again. Ive don't it too many times.

    There is 1 issue with 2nd gen 200x...metal tanks only and do not be supersized if you spend $1000 to get one redone. If you cant an aluminum one HREatv.com will make you one and i'd rather see aluminum used then steel when its related to fuel system.

    Either way be warned, these things are 40 years old and everything is wasted and worn out on them by now. Every time I build a trike I buy 3 or 4 junkers to build 1.

    I have a newer machine from 2007 and its stupid how easy I can get new replacement parts vs a 40year old machine.

    Thanks for the help. Overall it's in good shape. Yes the kickstart is broke. I just yanked the engine yesterday. I believe it's the gears that failed. Found a tooth. Also the hubs are loose on the axle. I can Weld so maybe the 300 axle is the way to go. Beyond those 2 issues the forks and shock needs rebuilding. Also I have to replace the plastics and seat cover. What does a nice 84 go for? I was thinking $4500. So that really doesn't leave much room.

    200XS WILL Never bring 4500. I only got $3200 on a fullredone fully custom upgraded 84 200x with NOS parts on it. Save you money and part the thing out. Its not worth the time. You can not weld the sprocket hub to the axle. The axles are heat treated and you will break the axle. Metal working 101.

    This has the 200x engine. Not SX. I will repair the 200x engine. My welding comment was a reply to the previous comment. He asked If I could weld because he makes sleeves to put a 300ex axle in it. I would never weld on the hubs.
    I know I could probably get more money for the parts but I just can't bring myself to destroy such a nice machine. They are getting so rare. Even if I break even I'm cool with it.

    300EX AXLE in 1st gen. I turned a new carrier and cut the old one off, you don't need to if you machine weld on sleeves for the seals. I've done this swap many times and so have a few friends. Who does not like a nice beefy axle swap.
