1984 Honda ATC 200S Gas Tank Repair or Replacement?? *Help*

Please help!! I am the owner of a 1984 Honda ATC 200S. It has the original steel tank on it. However, one of the sides has a good size dent on it and the paint is completely faded. Does anyone know if a reputable shop I could send the tank to for a “gas tank restoration?” I don’t want to get a plastic one for it.

Also..I’m really confused on gas tank shape between models? And I’ve tried reading other threads. But when I google search “1984 Honda ATC 200S Gas tank for sale” it seems like some tanks from
eBay pop up that say big red. Does anyone know what other Honda Atc models would fit my 200S? Or could I put a big red tank on it and it line up with the holes? Thanks!!

    Welcome to the site!
A big red tank will be too big for a 200S.
The 185S and 200S tank should interchange.
A 200M and 200e/s tank will interchange but will be too big for the 200S.
You can use a 200S tank on a 200m or a 200e/s but not the other way around.

If the tank dents don't have creases, a good shop can work them out from the inside. As far as restoring the tank, I'd consider the overall condition of the trike. A like new tank will look very out of place on something that's not nice overall. Faded paint can be brought back, at least somewhat, if there's not a lot of damage. Considering the overall condition, just having the bulk of the dents removed and cleaning/polishing the paint may be a better look.

A full restoration is going to cost several hundred, depending on repairs. That'll bring up the trike's value, your intentions with keeping or selling, and the overall appearance needs kept consistent.

When you pay a professional to work on motorcycle/ATV tanks, you're paying for experience, not the job. How much will that tank ever be worth?

You've got to really know what you're looking at on ebay. A LOT of parts are incorrectly listed. The 185S/200S have smaller capacity tanks than the big tired trikes. Basically, the ones with 25x12x9 tires has the larger tanks. How you can tell by just looking at pictures, I don't know, you'll have to look at several known examples and be able to compare them visually. From memory, I think the larger tanks have a flatter top, around the filler cap and the smaller ones have more of a sloping back.

This is kind of like the difference between the 185S/200S forks and the 200M (and optional 200/185 no letter). They can look very similar, but there are visual clues, without having to measure.
