Honda 185s still won't start without half choke and giving it some gas.

Same old honda 185s.Has air box and everything just missing foam filter. Got exhaust clean and clear, carburetor cleaned but it won't run start or idle without half choke. Will having a filter make any difference? Fuel line shows good fuel flow but wondering why it won't start without having having half choke and giving it gas while I pull start.i can usually keep it running half choke but occasionally just putters out idling. Any ideas welcome. *feels* Like it's running rough when I give it full throttle in any gear. I'm still having fun with it and riding it but something seems off.

    OEM carburetor ?
Sounds like the idle circuit is not working properly.

Yes original carb. Everything original on the bike. Can you explain a little bit on what you mean by the idle circuit? Diagnosing or fixing it? I'm new to working on these or anything like it. Always just riding them

I think he is referring to an issue with the pilot jet.

I have an ATC110 that behaved similarly to what you are describing. I had to try multiply slide needle clip positions before It would start and run consistently.
Seems like mine ran better after lowering the needle (or raising the clip position).
Also having the foam filter on will make some difference.
Put your butt on the inside fender or end up on the ground!

Oh thanks. I still have a shindy rebuild kit I've been meaning to use but when I cleaned the carb the jets were clear and o rings were in good condition so I still have the kit in the packaging

Yes a clean idle jet and a properly adjusted air fuel mix screw is what makes up the idle circuit . Lots of other things can factor in as well . A properly adjusted pulser pickup which controls the spark timing .
