1984 Honda big red transmission issues

I picked up a 1984 big red, how much do you know about the transmission and sub transmission or hi low and reverse in those? It’s been sitting for years, had a new top end job done to it, but it doesn’t seem to want to shift with foot shifter into any particular gear. The gear shifter moves up and down, but doesn’t click into gear, even when I rock the machine back and forth. The hi low seems to work ok. Maybe I need to move the hi low and try the gear selector? Just curious as to if anyone here has ever been inside of one of those and what your thoughts are. Thanks in advance!

Update, I ordered the correct gear shifter from fleabay, it now clicks into all gears and nuetral as well. However it rolls when it’s supposed to be in gear, I was told that’s normal due to the centrifugal clutch and the amount of time it’s been sitting. I’ve never owned one of these machines, so advice is welcome. Don’t everyone speak up at once now! Lol

If it rolls while in gear that means the one way clutch bearing is worn out .

The bearing is located behind the right side clutch cover . No you don’t need to pull the motor to replace it .
Best to buy a service manual if you plan on doing it yourself .
Parts that should be replaced while in there are the main clutch plates , idler clutch plates / shoes and the one way bearing .

Clutch plates and the bearing is available OEM , I believe the idler clutch is available in aftermarket .

    Check out partzilla .
    Part # 14 is the bearing .

Well got it running, the transmission is perfect, I was concerned about nothing I guess. Thanks to all who replied!
