take a deep breath before looking at a project.

my 350x has motor mounts cut off to fit a 400ex motor in.
I bought a 250x quad for the 350x motor thats in it. ive got a ad looking for 350x frame or parts locally and this afternoon i get a message. got a 350x frame and motor! its a 1.5 hours away and it's already 330. he says for a extra 50 bucks he'll eat half way. deal, send a Pic! i see a small pic and I didnt stop to really pay attention.
its a frame, front and rear suspension and I see a muffler which ill need, axles and hubs. price is 300 bucks, like I was saying im happy at the price and the drive.
So we meet up at 5pm, 1st thing I notice is the headlight. 1 bulb and looks like a 250r or 250sx. try to kick it over and its stuck. then I notice the small intake manifold and really decided Let's stop and really look.
well theres 1 exhaust pipe not 2. the upper 350x motor mount is definetly not there! the front fender has a 350x sticker which is what the guy went off of.
    well i see the frame sticker and its not a 350x. It's a 86 200x.
So what do you do? drove 45 minutes, seller was surprised its a 200x, and drove 45 minutes.
    im looking tje thing over.
It's a solid frame, exhaust and a Coffman muffler.
front suspension triple is all there, missing the axle and hub
rear suspension is intact witb rear brakes. shock and swing arm axle and hubs and chain

motor is complete, the left cover bolts are loose so the oils gone.
wiring is all there except the coil and kill switch.
Do I need a 86 200x project? not really, does the seller need a project? for sure no, someone gave it to him
I asked what he planned on doing witb it? no idea, he doesnt do trikes. so I asked if i bought it, what would he let it go for? He tossed out 200, i countered 175. so I now have a 200x that I really have no idea what to do with it. I checked the vin and its clear. probably just go out and get a title on the frame.
got the cylinder soaking in oil,

So is the 86 87 200x have any parts that would swap from my 185s or 84 200x?
Or toss it all up for trade for 350x parts? And is it worth spending the 60 bucks to title it? jim

I wouldn't title it; for what you paid you can make plenty of money back parting it out. You know the vin is clean so the frame is several hundred on its own and letting the buyer know it's "clean" will sweeten the deal (for some). The 86 or 87 are (in my opinion) the years to get in the 200X- many improvements to the machine and the six-speed.

Personally, I'd rebuild it as something like this would be good for my son when he's older. But I'm not you...

trouble is i have a pretty decent 84 200x and a pair of 185s's too. then ive got the 350x im trying to put back together. looking around ebay i can see getting too much into this thing even trying to male a roller. I saw a front axle, hub and rotor for 150 dollars, then to find a front wheel and tire. not to mention a tank, seat, plastics.
before I jump the gun, I may just put it on blocks and let the thing sit and make a decision later. jim

should have mentioned the title only runs about 57 dollars and is 2 trips to the dmv and 1 trip to the insirance office to buy the bond. jim

The 83-85 200x front hub ,axle , brakes and spacers will bolt right up to the 86/87 ., a lot cheaper than finding 86 parts .

thanks, ill keep a eye open flr that. got the cylinder soaking with oil, hopefully it'll break free. I may just take what will fit my 200x and 350x like the forks, rear brake/clutch assembly front fender and put the rest back up for sale. I really dont need another project. jim

My vote is to store it somewhere dry, slowly piece that 86 200x back together. You wont regret it on your first cruise. They store away nicely while they sleep standing upright. lets see if the picture works, been a while

found out the rear bearings are junk. I thoigjt the motor wasnt shifting into neutral. pulled the chain and the sprocket spins fine in neutral.
pretty sure the clutch is fried. when its in gear, I could turn the sprocket hooked to the rear sprocket yet the motor doesnt spin. Pulled the clutch side cover and the discs looks to have some browning like its burnt. The stator side has a 12mm bolt under the round cover, im afraid to turn it too hard, I dont want to snap the bolt. jim

If you ever remove the right side crank nut remember its a left hand thread . So many of these 86/87 cranks have been destroyed because people don’t know any better .

I would hang on to it and make it a rider.
The 2nd gen 200x is a great trail machine.
Much better than the 350x in my opinion and so much easier to kick start.
I would love to have one but a good one is hard to find.

I took anything I think is usable on my other trikes off the thing, motor is still soaking. I thought about listing it on craigslist, ive got 175 bucks in it, let someone else have theyre fun. But my trucks there, so I tossed it in the back of the truck and going to get the inspection and bonded title started. if I dont do anything witb it, it'll be easier to sell with a title. jim

got the title today and its sold. decided to just work on the 350x or maybe just keep the 250x quad with the 350x motor.
kept the hubs for my 185s, kept the triples and forks for spares, grabbed the harness and switch for the 350x the xh pipe to use to cobnle a exhaust for the 350x and the coffman muffler for something. amd i made 45 bucks. jim,

do the 86 200x forks and triples fit anything else?
    cdi?
kept the headlight guard too, unfortunately the headlight has a bb hole in the glass and the plastic is brittle.
had a home made looking grab bar, going to see if it'll work on the 350x.

Buyer of the frame basically needed the intake, his 86 was wrecked years ago by his dad and bent the rear swing arm. so they installed something shorter that bolted on. So now he has a titled frame thats not best, correct rear suspension and a good intake, not something held together with epoxy and duct tape. I think the price was fair for both of us. I sold it for $300 included the stuck motor with a good kick starter rear suspension and title. I paid 175 plus 60 for the title, 20 for gas and a 1.5 hour round trip to get it plus got to keep some parts that I could use. jim
