How do you check if rings are good?

I took my tri-moto apart to get the intake bolt holes fixed and I dont think I need new rings. To check them do I need to messure the gap?

Also the piston has some scoring on it (on the exhasut side) but the cylinder is alright. It has no noticed able scratches with finger nails.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

If it were me and I was at that point I would spend a little bit of cash and get new piston and rings. Better safe than sorry

To check the rings you need to measure the end gap while they are in the cylinder. A good manual will give you the spec's on them. It will also tell you how to do it.

Like Howdy said, but also a real easy visual on two strokes is to check for blackening on the sides of the piston below the rings. This would indicate "blow by" which is compression leaking past your rings. Its pretty rare to have rings worn past their spec mimits without seeing some blow by on a 2 stroke.
