Question about straight pipes

I was wondering that when you make a straight pipe for you ATC if it will cause engine damage like some say? To make one, do you just cut the steel tubing from the motor and unbolt it from the muffler? Then just weld a straight pipe from where the muffler originally hooked up and extend it to the rear of the machine. Would I have to add something at the end of this such as a push-mower muffler or is this not necessary. What will the perfomance gainings be with a straight pipe? Thank you

i have heard both sides. i took mine off once and it was loud then i put it back on for fear it might mess it up.

As long as you have a full length (out the back) pipe you should be fine. It is when you run with nothing at all (Open at the head) on a 4 stroke you run the risk of burning the exhaust valve. On a 2 stroke you will actually lose power cause they need some back pressure.

if the pipe is normal length it will have plenty of back pressure to keep from burning a valve and you will notice a power increase. but you have to think of other people and making all are trikes look bad by annoying someone. i used to do it back in thye day but i also lived on 1700 acres

I always chuckle when people say 2-strokes need backpressure. People, people, people. THE HEADPIPE ON A 2-stroke takes care of it all. You can run with NO MUFFLER on a 2-stroke if you please, with no performance gains or losses.(UNLESS the muffler is clogged)

On a 4-stroke however, it DOES need backpressure. Backpressure helps tune the powerband. More backpressure, more low end power, less top end.. Less backpressure, more top end power, less low end.

If you run without a headpipe, you will warp your exhaust valve. THe headpipe helps keep heat in there, which lets it slowly cool down without warping. As long as the headpipe is there, you can do whatever you want with the muffler.

That is what I meant by saying open at the head. If you run a 2-stroke with no headpipe you will not have any back pressure. I personally not sure what would happen to a 2-stroke engine with no head pipe for long term, but it would be to loud for me that is all I know.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood you amigo.

Actually, a 2-stroke with no headpipe(well, my Tri-Z) is about the same as my YTM200 with no headpipe. The Z might be just a tad louder, but not much. Don't worry, I didn't run without headpipes for long, like 5 seconds just to hear it lol.

I just got done building duals for mine. It gave itmore top end. And what i did is i cut the clamp off of the stock muffler and welded it tothe pipe, that way i don't ruin the header and if i was to buy a new muffler all i would have to do is unbolt the stright and bolt on the new one. But as far as ruining it goes it won't hurt your machine at all. It's pretty loud tho.
