    Quit smoking?

My 82 honda 200 has a smoking habit that I want to help it with. What is the least I can get away with? Just a set of rings, or must I delve deeper? Any thoughts appreciated, Thanks.

Explain further. Does it smoke all the time, or just when it's cold?

All the time, like a mosquito truck. It leaves black spots on your back from oil spray. Its gross, but it runs.

Hold up before you bore it out. Sounds like to me it's possible valves. Is it hard to start? If the rings/piston/bore are worn it will be hard to start. do a Compression test and see what you get. Personally it sounds to me like a valve issue of some sort.

After sitting all winter it started on the third pull with the same gas from the previous summer. She's not a real hard start, idles good too. The smoke gets heavier as it heats up, theres almost none at first.

    valve guide seals

I had similar problem on a 200X, the valve guide seals were bad.

It all depends on the condition of your cylinder and piston. If there are no major scores on either one and no other damage present. Check the wear on the wrist pin/connecting rod (any wobble?), and the piston skirt and cylinder walls. Also check the valves and guides, if they looked burned or have a lot of side-to-side wobble in the guides then you will need a valve job. If these things check out ok then a new set of rings and valve seals (which come with the top end gasket kit) will solve the smoking problem. This is known as re-ringing the engine and while it won't be as good as a "rebuilt" engine it will still last a long time if properly maintained.
If I can't fix it, it ain't broke!!

I knew i would get a patch joke...Anyway about the valves, my Clymer says you cannot grind the valves that they will burn without the "special" coating. Are they wrong? The valves are pricey, grinding is cheap. I like cheap.

Special coating? Hmm, never heard of it being on there. I've grinded a few valves over the years, and I've had to problems. Anyways, if it did have a coating, wouldn't it wear off when the valves constantly hit the head over and over again?
