    200x backfiring

I just bought an '85 200x which was just rebuilt last year. The guy said everything is fine on it exept for the valve clearance, which he said was an easy adjustment. He said that is why it is backfiring. It backfires mainly when engine braking, acceleration, and starting. Is this what the problem is? What are the valve settings? He said they were .400 and .600 but I'm just checking.
    Thanks
