    LT-4WD Won't Fire

    Well....

Got a 89 Suzuki LT-4WD. Last fall, I got a Moose carb kit and rebuilt the carb and put on a UNI filter and a Cobra exhaust. After rebuilding carb, it ran better, but idled rough and would backfire after gassing it.

I towed a old snowmobile from out from around the barn with it up to the shop to gut for freaksfix. It was rough on it, but if got it up there. It was idling, and then it stalled when I went to put it away. I tried to refire, but no luck. So I just pushed it into the shop. Tried to start it a couple more times, no luck.

Today it was nice outside. Had a friend up to ride the 350X's and hike the waterfalls. Well, he was late, so I tried to start it again. No dice.... so I shot a squirt of Starting fluid in the air filter..... not even a sputter.

Pulled the spark plug.... black and soaked.

This bike had $800 with of engine work (guy put oil filter in backwards and blew it up) and $400 of ignition work (new CDI, coil, etc) within a year before I bought it. He gave me the receipts. What do you think gives???

    Thanks.

Check your float level, make sure you have the right plug and check the valve adjustment. My Big Red did the same thing when I got it. I rebuilt the carb and it would start and run okay until you let it sit overnight. After that you would have to put a new plug in to get it to fire(old plug was black and wet). The valves were pretty far out, especially the ex. Adjusted the valves and it runs like a top.

Thanks guys.... put a new plug in and it started right up and idled like a champ!! It was smoking some tho, but probably just moisture from not running at all this winter.

If it dies with any choke on, and it backfires alot when you let off the throttle, what carb adjustments need to be made? Too rich/not enough air???? This is how it runs since rebuilding the carb.

Before rebuilding the carb, it only ran if you had the choke partially on, and had very sluggish throttle response. Oh... and I also put on a UNI filter the same time I rebuilt the carb.... added a COBRA exhaust before that. The guy I bought it from had the dealer rebuild engine ($800) and ignition system replaced ($300), but had a $5 lawn mower exhaust clamped to the header.

    Thanks guys!
