snapped a rod in new lawn mower! HELP!!

So we have like a 4 year old 19.5 hp craftsman lawn mower with a briggs and stratton motor. my dad ran it with almost no oil apparently and snapped a rod. i pulled the motor and took the heads and bottom end off. as soon as i saw the snapped rod and metal shavings i gave up hope. can someone tell me if the pistons and everything are junk or if the rod can just be replaced? i've never dealt with a blown motor. his options are a $625 shortblock from sears, a complete motor for $850, or a new entire 15 hp tractor for $800. Or maybe i can just replace the rod I dont know. any input is greatly appreciated!

More then likey if the rod broke from lack of oil you have a bad crank. Remove the rod cap and see what the crank looks like.
I had the RIGHT to remain silent, I didn't have the ability!
