Help with yamaha 225dx carb? or??

Hello everyone, this is my first atv and i am clueless about em. I did ride a polaris 400 4x4 once but thats about it, I bought a 225dx a few days back, the guy said it was his dads and its been in the garage for 3 years. I got it home and tried starting it and it wouldnt start, i took of the carb, and the fuel pipe and the air one were clocked up, i blew them out and its started up up, i was happy with that but when i got on and took it for a ride after about 2 min it started choking and barely going, maybe 1-2 miles an hour it just wouldnt rev up. I took it back into the garage i changed the spark plug with a new one and took the carb back of and checked it all again, it wasnt clocked up or anything, well i started it up and again it ran really good for about 2 minets or so and again started choking or something????? when i took of the fuel tube to check if the gas is coming in and to my surprise the engine reved up again for a few sec and then died out of gas, i took out my spark plug and it was pure black and now i dont know if its overfilling? and if yes then how do i change that? or is the fuel to rich? and how would i change that???? or is my air blocked somewhere??? please help me i have spent over 20 hours on that thing taking the carb of dozens of times, without any results it will run a bit and the slow down to 1-2 mph and wont rev up at all(( How do i fix that?? and one other thing the back of my bike where i am guessing my air filter should be there is a big square whole with 4 bolt wholes in the sides, am i missin somthing else other then the filter??

Thanks, any help would be really appreciated, i am just so confused, like i said my first atv!!

    Thanks in advanced

Did you remove the jets or just the fuel bowl?? Remove - carefully - all the jets and seats etc. - if you haven't already. It only takes a little bit of crud to kill it. Unless it had a previous problem before it was stored.

You are missing a plate on the back that holds the air filter tight against the front of the air box. When removeing the jets you can take a tiny peice of wire and clean out all the tiny holes (not supposed to use wire but it works). The spark plug should be gapped at 0.028. I fought mine for a couple days when I got it. Good luck

sounds to me like your main jet is plugged, I would definately start there. The reason it revved high when you took the fuel line off is because doing this caused a lean mixture with what little gas was left in the carb and then finally ran out of gas to kill the motor. My guess though is a good carb cleaning.---Joe p.s. im not an expert by any means

NGK D7ea or ND X22ES-U are the spark plugs you can use. A good parts store should be able to look it up. I have the manual on this bike if you have anymore questions. Good luck

MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU PUT THE FLOAT BOWL BACK ON, THE FLOATS DO NOT STICK. IF THEY STICK SHUT,LIKE MINE HAVE DONE IN THE PAST,YOU WILL RUN FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN RUN OUT OF GAS.

SOON TO ACQUIRE ANOTHER TECATE 3

Depending on the carb the jet set up is different. It's kind of funny I've made parts on a mill that took 20hrs. ran into thousands of repairs but only recently have I removed jets from a craburetor. I think like most people, to me cleaning a carb was washing it with gas outside and removing the fuel bowl and float setup and dousing them also. But especially when gas has sat in the carb for awhile and it has that smell you need to remove all the jets, adjustable screws etc. clean them with gas, CRC and compressed air. The two jet setups recently that I dealt with were different but similar. They all thread in with positive stops. When the jets are removed and the housing cleaned again other inserts will fall out when you tap the side of the carb or use air. I found that repeated spraying with cleaner and blowing them off will clean them spotless, why use wires that according to most people WILL slightly scar the soft brass metal and disrupt the mixture. I did use plastic items to assist popping them out and a pipe cleaner to clean the larger passages exposed when the jets are removed. As far as the screws which are adjustable mark there location down on a sheet of paper such as 9:00 when the carb is straight up, then thread them in counting half turn, one turn etc. They will bottom or stop at the end maybe 3.5 turns. When reinstalling turn out 3.5 turns and end at 9:00 just as it was. This may not be correct though as someone may have messed with them before, this is when you need a manual which states 2 turns out for the pilot screw or whatever. Remember this only aplies to the adjustable screws! ALL setups are different but it should be obvious when you look at them which are an adjustable screw or just a tightened down jet. And jets really just means "holes in pieces of hollow tubing" they are no more than that. Lastly another reason the book helps is we've all taken something apart, blown with air and ZING across the room flies an O ring and you know your fluked now. So take care to not do that! Hope this helps. :-D

((((( Ok, I took out the jets, there is only one that has a spring to it and the other two dont, so i am guessing that they gota be tight all the way down, and the one with the spring is the only one to get adjusted, but i had to go to church and didnt have time to play with that, but i did clean em all out, gas, compressor and a plastic tiny niddle, its all clean but still does the same thing, in 1 min it wont rev up at all and kills my spark plug i will play with the other jet with the spring today or tomorow morning, i was thinkging could it be something with ignition? or maybe i am missin something out of that carb? is there only supposed to be one jet with spring??? i am so confused already(((((

P.s...lucky you, a battery $12, i would have paid that i am going to go around a few of our battery places, see what they tell me!

I did not read anyone's post but paul's first post. It sounds to me like the carb might have the choke on. Jsut a thought.

I think the jet with the spring you are talking about is thepilot screw tighten it up all the way then back it out one and a half turns. That is a close staring point. All the other are tightened all the way down. You might want to check your float level. put a clear hose on the drain valve at the bottom of the bowl then run it up beside your carb. Run the engine and see where the level is at it should be just below the top of the bowl. If it is wrong you will have to bend the tab on the float to change hieght. It will run one of these times.
